Well with the Telkom news, altho I dont like them them, I cannot justify the cost differences in cost anymore. R599 for iBurst and R100/Gig to topup.

I would not say the price is prohibitive, but its not competitive IMHO..., please someone give me a reason to stay on iBurst

Richard, you know my situation - IBurst would sort me out in a flash (Give to me -I'll use it - can u keep paying the monthlies though?) ;)

Mobility, that's the whole point of the wireless.

But I agree with you, if that doesn't matter then the best service/price should be chosen. And now it would look like Telscum is one ahead

well not everyone is quick to jump on the whole new pricing cuts... look at teleskum they finally decided to drop prices by 39% but after how many Billions of Rands they racked up??? and Thousands of unhappy customers???

Iburst works for me! I don't pay teleskum I'm happy, I'm happy I get a constant 130kbps DL I'm happy not to pay double fees of phone bill and ADSL bill!
I'm happy to get 64k once shaped. I'm happy I waited 10 min to be setup with iburst instead of 6-12 months for DSL

Now I'm happy my call to iburst get's answered within 2 min
What you happy with?

So how much is Telkom now for 1mbps plus line rental and ISP charges?

Assuming telephone line rental stays the same - telkom = R857 for 3gig (including 3 gig telkom internet) Previously R1021.
IBurst = R599 (Monthly 3 gig account).
Cost of modems not included.

Its not the speed that I find ugly... its the 3gig bit... @299 for a 3gig topup. a 512 line will still be good in my books if they supplied 6 gig.

RichardP,

I feel your pain.

Me came back to SA in Oct 2003, after working in the UK for almost five years.

Was used to a BT 512kbps ADSL line @ ÂŁ25 a month, with 1GB 'cap' per day (was never enforced) and just couldn't believe it when Telkom ADSL costed R1000 a month - with a paltry 3GB monthly cap!!

I just refused to pay it and struggled on with a 56kbps modem for almost two years till WBS opened shop with iBurst. ANYTHING not Telkom is cool in my books and if it's portable, it scores even bigger.

Well, I'm not happy with the price, but it's the only alternative we have to Geldbom.

But for as long as the government controls the telecoms sector, I'm afraid this is what we'll have to contend with. Well, at least for as long as they're in power....

But unfortuanately those 384kb products do look pretty good... R245 + R190 for 3 gig + 30local right? and they have Mr.BEEP from Openweb who sorts them with new models and options and innovative ideas every week. They just got that R99 for a day uncapped service a few days ago. Stuff like that is usefull, but Iburst styas compltley stagnant...

Still worth it for me though, hope they will have SOME kind of a come-back to this? ADSL prices have been dropped three times since Iburst came out (maby only two since Iburst..) and Iburst still havent changed.
It was definatley worth it in the begining, and the changes lately are nice, but the price compared to ADSL... not shure any more.

yeah, would be really nice if iBurst were to drop their prices by something like 20% even.

I'm also happy with iBurst. I had to buy Iburst as I knew I was moving, so the choice paid off. I think all the customers are irritated that Telscum lowered their prices, but Iburst hasn't yet and there is no indication that they even want to. I'm on the contract and don't think I'm going to cancel it, but it would be nice if Iburst can show us that they can also lower prices.

imo, it's not that difficult, they can for a start just halve their topups. That's the most overpriced product by far they have. For me that has bad signal and slow speeds, reaching my cap doesn't make a diff :o

imagine if all the packages had the caps doubled at their current cost.

hmm... yumm.. 6 gigs..

I *wouldnt* like them to drop the top-up prices! I never use them and neither do alot of people because you have uncapped, so why get extra gigs at a high (will still be high even if dropped by like 30%) price?
Rather increase cap, or if not at the least speed
Oh and price comes first... then you could convert it to cap if you wanted or just save some money.

So doesnt shaun or someone want to spill some secret bussiness plan stuff to us? Or at least some cryptic hints that we can waste our time talking about in the forum?

You said it. Money talks. That is the sad part as what has also been said. If only I-Burst dropped their prices a little. (maybe they might in Telkom's "HUGE" decrease in ADSL rates)

At least with I-Burst you know what you going to get when you capped. I use ADSL at home on an IS account. Don't even bother to go to international sites. I-Burst at work i still have 15 users which use the I-Burst with a minimal complaints in the speed department. fair enough they not downloading podcast or spending their day on youtube.com

I guess it depends what your application is RichardP.
I was thinking about dumping I-Burst when ADSL becasue avalible in my area. Still waiting after one year from the first attempted order. I'm thinking I must not bother. I-Burst Rocks
/me touches wood

Side note: after my fifth attempt at ordering ADSL they "helpful" Telkom person. said sorry you cant get ADSL becasue you are in a fibre area. Fibre is "more modern and better quaility" he says "and we will not lay down copper as that is an older technology"
So I replied "Oh..ok I get. I can continue to use my dial up on fibre with better quality instead of getting ADSL... makes sense"
He was quite for a while... and i hate it when they ask "can i help you with anything else?" NOOOOOOOOO i just want a $%@#(*& ADSL line!

Not anymore

lol a 31% drop in DSL line rental... hmm lets see

Telkom has also recently come under fire at the ICASA ADSL pricing hearings for their high tariffs for ADSL services. One of the factors pushing up the price is the high charge for line rental which only Telkom receives. This is currently the R477 for the 512 DSL service or the R680 for the 1024 DSL offering.

The proposed DSL 192 and 384 monthly rental is R245 from 1st August 2006 - a price decrease of R25 (9.3%) on the former and R114 (31.8%) on the latter.

Reductions in line rental for their flagship service, the 1024 DSL offering, will fall by 24.1% (R164 per month) costing R516. The 512 DSL service will also drop from the current price of R477 to R362 per month (also a 24.1% reduction).

yay you save that much more for DSL go for it! less contention ratio for me on iburst :D

WTF For R100 rand reduction... that's not a bloody reduction!

Ok, but on a 3Gb account you get another 3Gb for R399, so thats only R99 more than getting 3Gb on adsl. I would rather pay that for my 6Gb than pay (twice) for my line, then for my phone and then still pay some ISP for my user/pass and then sit waiting 2 to 6 months for someone to install, only to be told 6 months later that sorry, there is no adsl in my area.
