Hi forum,

I had mild acne in the later stages of High school and it only really bothered me in Varsity.
After two treatments of Oratane (roaccutane generic) I was pretty clear of all zits :(

In the last year though they have come back and are beginning to annoy me.I would say I
have it mild at the moment, but still there isn't a single day that I won't have a nice lil b@stard appear and
ruin my confidence. I know it shouldn't matter but Acne destroys self confidence no matter how you look at it.
Right now I have one one of those beauties that's right in the bridge of my nose and eye ,so I can literally see it and feel it  Eish

I would just like to know if anyone here has found a vitamin or something over the counter to prevent the outbreaks a bit better? No ways I'm going back on Oratane (shiny skin, dry @ss lips, nosebleeds etc).

Anyone have any advice.

Cheers and thanks for the sound advice as always!

Sometimes changing your diet helps.

Sometimes yes but depending on the person. I am 31 and i cannot be on certain drugs now due to certain factors in my life and i have tried everything to stop it. I have tried cutting out about 20 foods to eating well to eat only the same thing everyday for a month.

What i eventually figured out is the minute i shave it's game over around my chinny chin chin :(. I am bit tanked at the moment but i can only use that 3 head thing that spins haha i know i should what it's called but i cannot remember.

Anyways since i started using it, i have very few issues. The odd pimple here or there but it doesn't go from one to a cluster
anymore. Every time i shaved with a razer and shaving cream about 3 days later acne for a week. Stopped shaving for 3 months and i never got one pimple eating the exact same things daily but each person is different it could be diet.

You can also try to change your skincare range. That really helps alot too. You can try the dermalogica range - they have a Clearing Face Wash, specifically formulated for breakouts. I use only dermalogica products on my skin, and it really is very good. Also, drink lots of water, and wash your face twice a day, and put a non oily moisturizer on your face.

Sugar. No I'm not calling you sugar- sugar causes acne for some people. For some its milk. Those are the two I know of. Also don't touch your face, that also causes (due to dirt).

It depends entirely on each person, could be their diet/stress/toiletries/allergies/ingrown hairs/etc that are causing their skin to break out. I swear by using normal soap, a rough face cloth and a safety razor or personal trimmer.

Some people are predisposed to getting acne and there isn't a magic cure, it's just something you manage but for many people it's about management.

My grandfather had acne in his 50's. Boil acne his entire life. I am not a big believer in all these creams and what not. For me they make it worse not better. My mom had it as well and it was in my dads family so naturally my teen years were a nightmare. There was no way i was avoiding bad acne haha.

A rotary shaver? :P

I'm the same. I can't shave with a razor anymore. If I do I'll have acne for a few days. By the time it dies down I'll have to shave again. I'm using a shaver you'd use for your head at the moment and although it doesn't get a very close shave I'd rather be using that than have acne 24/7.

@OP: It's a difficult question. There's a LOT of info and like the others have said; everyone is different. Some general knowledge things would be to:

  • Wash your face regularly
  • Not to use the same blade too many times (spreading dirt)
  • You could take a Zinc tablet a day which is supposedly good for your skin
  • Shave properly (not against the grain, soak your skin before the time to open the pores etc) so that you don't agitate your skin

Sorry to kinda hi-jack this but does anyone here with acne-prone skin use a foil shaver? I was thinking of buying one of those based on the things I've read about it. I bought a rotary shaver and it was terrible :/

Foil shaver, must go google.

I have heard the don't shave against the grain story but no matter how i shave i get acne on my chin. I hate it because i got no other issues but my chin. The rotary shaver has worked the best but the best is not shaving at all.

Yea i also use one of those head shavers for my chin and mouth area, then rotary for the rest. Seems to sort it out for me.

That was annoying when i didn't realize shaving with a blade and cream was the issue, shave, acne, acne clears, shave, acne ahhhhhhhhhhh and to think i spent months searching for the food causing it LOL

I've actually been wanting to try those cream hair removal products but i am scared of what might happen.

Foil should be less harsh on the skin than rotary. Have you tried the wet electric shavers?

If I bring anything even mildly soap near my skin I have problems....

There are many things that can cause it. Experiment with different stuff, food etc.

Yup but if the area is isolated there is a good chance it not food as that should normally cause acne in various area's and not just one.

Went through many months of food and diet to realize that :D.

It burns worse than anything i have ever felt, i want to say worse than getting voltaren cream in your eye/groin area.

I tried the sensitive one which said can be used on the face and yeah it didn't work.

I use a 3 day beard trimmer for my beard, since i like the rougher look, so then i never have to shave, though i only had acne in my teens never other times.

Can't say if it works as I never had the problem, but an old wifes tale says a green apple diet clears the colon of toxins which causes ance. I heard you go on a green apple detox diet where you basically eat green apples every day, googled and found a similar story. As usual, use it dont use it..

http://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Acne

Some people believe that green apples are extremely good for preventing and fighting existing acne both on your face and around the body. To avoid acne, eat one green apple a day (cut it into slices if need be and eat it throughout the day). And to reduce existing acne, cut a green apple into quarters and rub two of those quarters over the acne areas. If needed, use the rest, or just eat them. Combine this with drinking plenty of water to achieve clear skin.

go back on the oratane but take it every 2nd day. my daughter has bad acne which scarred her face. the scarring is now being repaired from the oratane, but the side effects aren't nice because of the dry lips etc. so i told her to take it every 2nd day. have lots of creams and lip balm available as well.

Just visit a dermatologist and save your self the cost of trying things that work for other people.

Doxycycline. It's an antibiotic and it takes a long time to kick in, but it is cheaper than roaccutane and worked well for me. I think you need a prescription.
