Workers who held a whip-round to pay for a colleague's vital brain scan saved his life, doctors say.

Delivery driver Gary Harris had been suffering severe headaches and vomiting for months, but was told he would have to wait 11 weeks for an NHS scan.

Instead his workmates at Bristol's Park Furnishers clubbed together to find the £700 needed for a private check-up.

The scan revealed a large brain tumour, which doctors say would have been fatal had Mr Harris waited for the NHS scan.

My aunt fortunately did not go on a waiting list at Tygerberg hospital when they needed to replace all her valves after her recent heart bypass surgery.

She would have been dead if she had to wait 11 weeks for a bed.
 
Dude, the NHS is free.

Even at our public hospitals you have to pay a fortune, how much did your aunt's operation cost?
 
This thread should probably get closed very soon, many people are now going to post links of SA crimes.

Then we will have an ongoing "war" with people trying to prove which country is worse off etc, by posting horror news links.

I have just shown that your precious little UK NHS is a pile of dog **** even in a worse state than ours :).

My aunt is alive today thanks to the excellent care she has received from the heart unit at Tygerberg and my uncle did even have to pass around the collection tin to get her into the better Panorama Medi-Clinic.

Tygerberg is cramped and the place could do with some paint and new plaster on the walls but the equipment is brand new and the doctors and nurses do their best under very difficult conditions.

I thought it was a first world in the UK but obviously I was mistaken so the poor bloke had to vomit his guts out for 11 weeks while waiting for a brainscan and hope he did not have tumour.

What a bloody joke.

She had two operations ... a bypass and then valve replacement ... she had not choice as they have no medical aid.

She has been there about a month now and the cost at Panorama would have been probably in the region of 300,000 to 400,000 if she had been on medical aid.

Dunno the bill yet but my uncle will probably cough up only a few thousand based on his income.

look, the article is on the bbc website, yeah? so it would make sense they are highlighting a particular case, yeah? good.

now me and you both are not in school anymore, so lets drop the games for 10 seconds.

newspapers will always report the worst , it is called sensationalism. should you start digging anywhere with a big enough spade you will end up digging up dirt. no, the nhs isnt perfect, but go slag off something that is actually fscked up if you want to get a rise. like joburg gen.

i am happy your aunt is alive. it is apparent there are still doctors in s.a. seriously, please tell me what you are trying to prove by mentioning your aunt? that doctors still exist in s.a.? doh.
or that they can fix peopple? doh.
ffs, one case out of how many zillions does not make an efficient medical service, so your isolated case, and my isolated case do not make for any conclusive judgements on the state of medical care in any country. my personal experience has been pleasant, many times.
 
My numerous personal experiences with the NHS have all been excellent. Still - what relevance to do first hand accounts have eh? :rolleyes:

But if Pupa and others can do it and get away with it without being even questioned by the sheep on this forum then I can do the same and twist the truth to suit my agenda.

Just contrast how you all attack me here while you all (silently) agree with Pupa when he pulls his angle.

Just an experiment to show how biased we all are.

How childish, Still pissed off! Shows you cannot give what it takes. No subtle ability's. The whole way you approached this is like all the others. No different. I was one of the first to read you post and thought I should wait for other replies. You hang yourself Tibby. Wake up and Grow up . We post about facts happening in South Africa. Like the Con gas Issue! Not this sensational cr@p you "dug" up. We do not have to dig up anything as it is given to us as daily events. You posted this out of the bottom of your heart as we saw it everywhere in the same trend. Now you make it as an experiment. Foolish for that matter too and in Bad taste if I may say! Tibbs let agree to disagree and argue the validity of the issues at hand and who is to blame for them.

There's a difference - pupa et al - while often posting what could be considered by some camps flamebait - at least keep it relevant; ie South African issues. Your post seems to be stretching this relevance past it's limit.

Since the UK is a fav destination for people wishing for a "better" life outside of S.A frankly makes it all the MORE relevant.
