Let me start by saying that while I am an avid cyclist and do the Argus every year in close to 4 hours, but, I have a serious junk food addiction and suffer from the yo-yo syndrome. Every Summer I am in tip top shape, but over Winter I pile on the weight......

I have tried to get out of this cycle but I am just addicted to food too much and I would rather pay the price and have to diet before cycling season and still get to enjoy my winter pigging out (no judging please)

So normally I start losing weight on 1 September, a sort of Spring turnaround. I started yesterday (31 July) as I am just sick and tired of having work pants soo tight that it hurts. Jumped on the scale and need to lose about 25kg's.....

I have done Atkins (lost 15kg's), Special k (lost 30kg's) and am doing the calorie counting one again as I lost 20-odd kg's with it last year. Basically the idea is to exercise 4-5 times a week and keep daily calorie intake below 1200 calories, or 4800 kilojoules if you will. I keep a detailed food diary on http://www.fatsecret.com and use the app on my Galaxy Tab to enter everything I eat. I find that by keeping a journal, you are more likely to stick to the diet.

I know the yo-yo diet thing is bad..... and I have heard the whole "you need to learn to eat properly forever" but I suck at that and I like food faar too much.

Anyone tried any of these or any other diet with good results?

Yup i did the eat well but do not remove much diet. So i just eat well and i can still have my weekly take out, plus some nice chips and choccies.

Everything in moderation you will lose weight. Eat the right things but make sure you make time for the bad things then you won't feel the need to binge.

Diets dont work ,,,change of lifestyle works (permanent ) just stay away from refines carbos.

I disagree.... diets do work...... in the sense that more calories out and less calories in will make a person shed weight.

But yes, a permanent solution is what is needed.... if only I did not eat soo much.... :(

Atkins works best for me. End of story.

I hate diets, it works for some people but I hate feeling restricted in some way (E.g. you can have this, but this...no no no...you may never even touch this!!)

After matric I put on a few extra kilos, probably because I realised that scooters pizza and various other places had "special" discounted prices for people in our office complex :erm:

All I did to lose the weight, in the end, was to really make sure I take in enough water - stopped taking in excess fats and sugar. So milk went from full cream to low fat (which I still don't think made a huge difference), no sugar in coffee, less coffee, chewing on sugar-free gum when I had the urge to nibble on something, and started ordering fresh salads/sandwhiches instead of pizzas/pies etc. Obviously I still had takeout every now and then, but just not as much as I used to.

Don't know how much weight I lost exactly, but it was quite a noticeable difference.

I really enjoyed doing it as I am a biltong addict and with calorie counting there is little or no biltong allowed....

But I always found that when finishing atkins, if I had a couple of beers, the carbs would make me seriously ill!

So stay on it for life and never have a weight problem again... :p

Sigh..... if only.......

Do you go into induction every now and again to lose weight or have you stayed on it?

I did it for 8 months or so, lost 20-odd kilos. Then my domestic situation changed (moved into a house which was decidedly NOT low carb friendly) and I put it back on again - too hard to resist the chips/toast etc that were ALWAYS presented at mealtimes...

I'm losing again, have been steadily doing it the last 9 months or so, am 15kg down again, with about 10 to go till I'm happy.

I don't follow their numbers strictly, ie, I don't count grams of carbs. After a long time of low carbing, I know what I can eat and what I can't, and the quantities look after themselves really.

Sorry didn't read the rest but it's always the same answer - you need to make sure your calorie intake is at a consistent set target each day and that with moderate exercise to burns some of those calories so you are effectively setting your body at a negative calorie intake at the end of the day.

It's not rocket science people just don't have will power and self control anymore.

So: eat healthy, exercise daily, smile :)

Incorrect. But carry on.

Atkins blew my mind..... I noticed that my body shrank waaaay faster than the scale was actually showing and because of minimal carbs, there was no more bloated feeling and my stomach went nice and flat!

Bacon and eggs for breakfast while losing weight is impossible to grasp until you have actually been on atkins!

That and the energy levels... complete lack of mid-morning or mid-afternoon slump... I get migraines triggered by low blood sugar. I went for 6 months without a headache... winning all round.

Get divorced.

I lost 25kg's in about 3 months (well, that and about 60kg's in one day).

I'm really skinny but have a layer of fat over my stomach, will a diet help get rid of it?

Agreed, but strenuous exercise was challenging.... simply no power on hills when cycling or doing intervals on an exercise bike!

The daytime energy rocked! Headaches not soo much

From the research I did (I'm not a heavy exerciser) you can actually train yourself up to generate the power... It just takes "getting fit" again, this time for ketone metabolism...
