N1 JHB to be a toll road by year end

yep..

Or the Dead Milkmen song 'She's got dollar signs in her eyes'

Their exuse will be 'but London does it..' Forgetting that London has a first world public transport system. The clapped out kombi's do not consitute a 'public transport system'

I predict the old Joburg/old Pretoria road will become even more overladen, and they dont dare toll that piece of crap! Wonder where they plan to build these tollgates?

Can you imagine what this will do to the traffic on this highway? Its already a nightmare.

Lol madness tolling roads the city is insane what about me and thousands of others who go out to see clients and every day (4 clients a day and our sales consultant sees about 6 a day) It now becomes expensive for me to work. They cant expect me to use public transport with my toolbox and laptop in tow ? Have they ever tried public transport ? Catch a taxi from Glen Marias to JHB CBD its an interesting trip. I already pay insane amounts of money for petrol every month and for insurance (comprehensive business) and a license fee for my car. Now its got to become more expensive ?? Petrol price includes road tax does it not ? and the R200 they get from every car on the road every year goes where ?

as long as the M1 is not tolled I don't mind :)
Wouldn't matter, I'm guessing that the toll would be after where the M1 and N1 merges. They must be crazy to place a toll on one of the busiest highways on the continent. The only thing that comes to mind is money, and no other reason. The old Pretoria road is now gonna be packed with traffic, as well as the R21.

That section of highway is actually the busiest in the souther hemisphere, let alone the continent. The whole idea is woeful in the extreme and just another way the gvmt is planning on screwing joe public over...

Rather than look at ways to combat overstreached traffic flow, they simply see it as a cashcow to milk.

Oh my word, the bastards really want to piss people off.

The funny thing is they want it all done by december, come on this is government, YEAH RIGHT!
When it comes to milking the public, you'd be surprised at how quickly they can get things done :(

Another national Rip off, How the hell will they handle the traffic?? You may ask. If someone stops to piss on the side there is a backlog?? Logic defy's me here thats for sure!

You forget that logic has bugger all to do with what the gvmt does! If they want to toll the main artierial road in Gauteng and cause untold chaos and delay, then let them.. See how quickly they voters run off. You can give them crap housing, poor service, bad jobs, but be the cause why they spend 5 hours a day in traffic and see what happens..

A few months back there was a big accident on the M1 btwn Allendale and New Rd. I was going through to Irene from Sunninghill. Saw the back log (solid on N1 right back to Fourways offramp going west) decided to go the back roads. Old PTA, Allan Rd, back onto Old Pta through to Irene.. It took me TWO hours.. Every single road was solid, not moving. Imagine having this everyday as people try to either a: avoid the toll and use back roads (which already are clogged way before rush hour) or b: have to stop and pay a toll..

in england they dont have a toll gate that is difference i may be wrong but you get charged via your number plate

so the traffic doesnt actually grind to a halt

i might be wrong though

I was thinking about that, there is no real alternative route for volume traffic. This sucks because we travel this road every day

What about all the false number plates around?
