A time shift + a DST implementation may well be a good idea, especially in the Western Cape where summer evenings have daylight well past 19:00.
 
Cape Town is in a different time zone anyway :) Ever tried phoning cape town at 8am ?
 
(LOGIC ALERT) What? All that'll do is make them do everything they currently do an hour later, the limited supply the wires can carry from inland and koeberg can supply is still the same, the usage too... (/LOGIC ALERT)
 
oh jeez, yet another "why we should have time zones" topic. Time zones = stupid idea.

No - not really - it is to do with daylight.... if you get up when it is lighter (and likely warmer), you won't use electicity as much (lights/heat), likewise on the evening side - if you can do stuff in the light, you won't need electricity as much. Daylight savings is just that - it allows you to use as much daylight as possible.

What's the main benefit?

Energy conservation. In the United States, which already has Daylight saving, they have energy savings of between 5,5% and 10%. This is because the amount of residential electricity needed in the evening hours is dependent on when the sun sets and when people go to bed. As people tend to observe the same bedtime all year round, by artificially moving sunset one hour later, the amount of energy used is reduced. This is especially relevant in South Africa, which has recently experienced a substantial number of power cuts in major metropolitan areas. In a nutshell, we'll use less electricity because we'll have more sunshine hours.

we need daylight savings more but that would be too confusing for the people so time shift might be good.
 
I still don;t buy into this.
I go to bed after I have watched LOST (as an example). Regardless of when the sun sets, I will still do this.

Or is DSTV / SABC going to broadcast in two time zones?

And as a way to save "peak load", peak load is more than an hour per morning / evening - more like 2-3 hours - so that also makes no sense.
 
UGH - no to DST!

It's a horrible and incredibly annoying system. Do you really want to change the timezone you live in twice a year?

That includes suddenly getting up at 6AM one morning instead of 7AM, and then carrying on with the 6AM wakeup time for 6 months? That first week is a bit of a bitch, especially when your body clock is used to something else. I wonder how much productivity is lost in the first few weeks of DST simply because people are tired and unproductive at work.
 
People in Gauteng, doing business with people in CapeTown will loose effectively 2hours of business because of this. Right?

Nope, will just lead to extra work hours or extra shifts = more power consumption.....

DST = WOT.

it breaks the pattern. so traditionally the whole country wakes up more a less the same time so more a less the same time you have millions of kettles boiling water... you know **** like that, but i reserve the right to be horribly wrong :D

Exactly. the biggest issue is geysers and particularly stoves
 
Ahh on the DST issue I feel its pointless and will confuse matters here. And as for DST to save power... it would be great if the government had gotten its act together a little sooner (ie. a lot sooner).

DST is not a fix for incompetent people in charge of our power management.
