Anyone around here still on the Kyalami tower. Lately throughput hovers around 250 Kbps (IBurst speed test) for me. Good 'ol near 1 Meg days are long gone. Starting to smell less & less like 'broadband' ever day.
 
hhhm, i am on the kyalami tower, and was DL'ing a bit of MS Vista Beta 2 today. Since it is off MS website, things were cruising even during the day with something like 90KB/s average via Flashget with 5 concurrent connections.
 
Thanks for the input mic ... so maybe I need to troubleshoot my side???

I don't think you need to troubleshoot. The reason why mic_y is getting 90KB/s is because he is using a download manager opening several connections to MS to download the same file. This way he utilizes the full power of his broadband connection. If you read this post http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=42386 it might help you understand that you do have the ability to get 1mbps. A good test would be to get a download manager which opens multiple connections and see what kind of speeds you get. I've found that if you download one file with one connection you get a limited max speed of say download 40KB/sec = 250 kpbs link speed.

E.g.
1 download 40KB/sec = 250 kpbs link speed
2 simultaneous downloads each at 30KB/sec = 550kpbs link speed
3 simultaneous downloads each at 30KB/sec = 750kbps link speed

The more files you download the higher the kbps link speed appears to get.
 
andytl5, imo I don't think that's the problem. I also use dl managers, and it doesn't get my speed up even if I have multiple connections. Since the beginning of the month it feels like I had no change in my speed. Feels like I'm still on my cap. I have a terrible connection. I will do some tracing and testing tonight, but till then I think he has a bad connection like me.

I think the reason for my poor connection is huge packet loss...is it also bad for everyone else or has some people solved their packet loss problem?

Hi Andy,

I havent tested with DL manager (use FDM 2.0) ... my point is still I'm paying for a 1 Mbps service and I shouldn't have to resort to multi-threaded to get somewhere in the region of 512-1024 kbps.
 
I totally understand that one should not have to multi-thread to get the speeds they want.
I do feel that something has changed with the way for example, downloads are being shaped, I never had to multi-thread before Christmas, but now I do in order to get the golden speeds.
Why this is the case I don't know. The argument might be that a web page downloading to your browser at 250 kbps would be no quicker if it were downloaded at 1mbps purely because of the small amount of content (data) it contains. I'm sucking my thumb here but i do agree when it comes to downloading files I don't want it to be throttled.
 
today Kyalami tower has been a bit dodgy...

but prior to today, i was getting great speeds and performance form the Kayalami Tower albiet i was only online at night.

when did your degredation problems occur Roman4604?
 
Im having terrible speeds today in Cape Town. Its worse than cap, not shure hwtas goping on.. im hoping just resesting my modem will do the trick, but im not getting over 80kb at all!

It this a common thing today?

I've been getting dead IPs again by the dozen today, but when I do find a good IP speeds are at full speed on the same base station as you are on.
 
Yah, must be another dead IP.. should we still be giving them all over to BBICTH?

I think he has enough..

I tried a download now and it went at 400kb, not great but better, yet my browsing still sucks.

Yeah, I'm not bothering to waste my time collecting anymore dead IPs' for him as he did not even respond to my other post, come to think of it nor did Shaun Green.:rolleyes:

Something must be wrong at the Plumstead base station or with the IPs.:confused:

Haven't been testing in any scientific way, just been using/working as normal and have noticed a steady decline in responses over time (last 1-2 months).

I'm no RF expert, but it seems my radio link is not the problem ... UTTraceStar output. So all I can think is either the tower (notice load=3) or the bandwidth to Verizon are oversubscribed?

Your decent speed experiences differ with this tho ... will keep searching for answers?
 
iBurst Flying tonight for me ;-)

Just Downloaded 50.8 MB File from Int. site with single thread (using wget on linux) and got an average download speed of 105.79 KB/s.

.... 120 KB/s earlier tonight with multiple downloads with FireFox, fastest ever before was about 104 KB/s

Strand (Cape Town) tower.

PS: Maybe I'm just lucky tonight by hitting stuff thats already in cache servers

Well when i had a 2nd level support guy come to look at my problem I asked him what is up with Kayalmi Tower. He said it is the most used Tower in northern Johannesburg, because it covers a large area.

I think just the tower is over saturated with users, but he also said iBurst were planning to relieve the load with more towers by the end of November this year.

Hasnt been bad for me lately?

Maybe the winds are blowing my way this month :D
 
Gotta be load, this morning @ ~2:00am was getting ~ 850-900 Kbps, now (weekend) ~ 350 Kbps, while norm for weeknights is ~ 250 Kbps.

November is a long time away ... possibly Telkom will give me ADSL before then?
