Article: SAA lifts white male ban

SA Airways has lifted a ban on applications by whites for its cadet pilot programme, according to Sunday's Rapport newspaper.

The airline's website had been changed so that applications from white men would not automatically be rejected, according to Fikile Thabethe, head of the airline's legal department.

So they'd just be manually rejected later then? :p

Still won't fly with them - only think I have ever done so as a teenager once before.

Conspiracy theorists will still hold the banner high, that white males will be discrimnated against in the review process.
And based on their (SAA's) prior actions (quota system that was in place) I'm obliged to give them their day in the sun.

SAA's such a disgrace and burden to the this country and it's taxpayers.
If we're not bailing them out every other year with cash, they're colluding and fixing airline prices.
Star Alliance Member? What "Star"?

With out a doubt just correcting their mistake, but still going to be racism behind the scenes ensuring they do all possible for the others to pass and not the whities.

Yes, they said in a press conference that they still reserve the right to employ only the previously disadvantaged, and still the planes will fall from the skies.....

I predict our first big disaster within the next 5 years. In the next 10, an aircraft accident will be no more shocking than a taxi accident.

I hope that you are never correct, one hopes that even with a racist quota, folks are still required to have the mandatory skill/qualification/aptitude to perform the job.

Why do some of you assume that not accepting white applicants automatically means accepting incompetent applicants? Are white males the only people capable of flying planes? :wtf:

My thoughts too.

Though I'm willing to wear shades for the sake of our tinfoil hats cadres out there - I don't agree with the racial implications that some posts in this thread and the other have loan themselves to.
Humour is cool, but it sometimes it just borders on others/our innate intolerance and hate (if you will) for the racial divide.

Infact - the way some of those posts are worded - I just jump to the conclusion of a racist sitting behind the keyboard.

Nou ja...

Because this policy has worked so well everywhere else.

If the quotas pass the same final exams as the legacy white pilots did, I have no problem having one captain the plane in which I travel.

If they lower the final pass marks in order to have a better throughput rate (i.e. schools) then I have a BIG problem with it.

Guys, you can call it whatever you want, if you think about racists, so be it. I just simply hate that word coming up everytime.

First of all, you need to be realistic and wake up. Look around you, ask questions, speak to people.

Thinks like Affirmative action, BEE, etc. has taken its toll on SA and the majority of companies. However, these are things that have been implemented and we have to live with it.

It is a fact that companies, large companies are filling positions, senior positions, based on quotas. Many of those in that positions are not qualified or skilled to perform the duties required. These companies, however, simply give these individuals some other tasks to perform - at least the quotas are filled.

Educational institutions have passed a large number of individuals in past years, who do not even pass their exams. Hundreds of certificates, diplomas and degrees have been issued to previously disadvantaged people who did not qualify for it. There are numbers of people who complained about this, people who marked examination papers, even lecturers.

The same will happen here. The quotas need to be rectified in the SAA. Do you really think they will spend 2-4 years training a whole intake of previously disadvantaged people and then have a big failure percentage and then just accept it? Here again, people who do not deserve it will qualify and be placed inside the cockpit of an aircraft with 140 to 300 people inside. They cannot afford to spend 2-4 years and only have 10% of intakes qualify.

This is a fact. Unfortunately they are doing this with the wrong industry and playing with people's lives.

You must be new to mykkk.

I wouldnt mind these policies being implemented, to a certain degree, in other industries, but where lives of hundreds of people are directly at stake, then I'd prefer everyone to be given an equal oppurtunity to apply, and the best, most capable candidates being given the job ... Irrespective of their race or sex.

Voicy, if you speak to someone who knows the industry, you will find that the time period to qualify and and the course itself has already been downgraded in order to accommodate the previously disadvantaged.

In previous years the white Cadette intakes, if you studied full-time, it would take about 4 years to get both your commercial pilot license (CPL) and your airline transport pilot license (ATPL), which is required to fly the jet engine planes.

Now, they are doing this in two years with their new Cadette intakes. This is not possible, and like the previous posts stated, they hope I am wrong, well, I do hope so too!

30,000 feet is not the place for politics - it's the place for the best person for the job regardless of their race or gender.

Do you need to have a private pilot's license before applying or am I misunderstanding? I was under the impression that you need not have ever been in a cockpit to apply.

SAA has recently re-launched its Cadet Pilot Training Programme that targets previously disadvantaged unemployed youth as well as individuals who are currently studying to finalise their commercial pilots licence. The duration of the ab initio flight training is 24 months. On successful completion cadets enter SAA as In-flight Relief Pilots and are developed for a further 2 years prior to becoming fully qualified.

Requirements

Grade 12, maths and physical science at level 6
To qualify for financial assistance, candidates must have completed their private pilots licence (PPL).
Must attached proof of flying licence or proof of flying training
Employees of SAA, who have gone solo but not yet acquired a PPL, may apply for financial assistance towards further flight training.
