Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Sunday declared a week of national mourning in the wake of the deadly violence at platinum producer Lonmin's Marikana mine, where police gunned down 34 striking workers.

"The nation is in shock and in pain.

"We must this week reflect on the sanctity of human life and the right to life as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic," said Zuma three days after the tragedy.

The week's mourning will start on Monday, when flags will fly at half mast at flag stations in South Africa and missions outside the country. Thursday was declared an official day for nationwide memorial services.

Is this guy for real ?

I'll mourn the hacking to death of two police officers and that's it.

Flags at half mast for a bunch of thugs - fy.
 
I support it, not that I'll be mourning though. Just tragic that unions can put peoples lives at risk for such unrealistic expectations.
 
The only reason why I would be sad would be that the police didn't manage to kill all of the strikers...

I don't care if you didn't agree with these strikers or whatever, just have some respect.

38 + people died. Of course they're going to have a ceremonial thing, it's kind of a big deal.

So its fine for the ANC to declare a week of mourning but nothing for the cops that got butchered?
Wtf is wrong with you people supporting these animals?
 
I guess hoping for this incident to be a catalyst for changing the governance around protesting, the right to bear arms during a protest and Union accountability is not going to happen. Instead the issue is hastily blanketed by the Prez because of his fear of the unions taking away the support him and his party, which both desperately rely upon.

I'm not supporting them. I'm just saying that of course they will have a mourning.

Calling for more murder is really offensive to me.

I think the policemen who died deserve the nations condolences too.

No problem with friends, relatives and co-workers morning them, but to expect the nation to mourn them with flags at half-mast is nothing but sucking up to the unions by Zuma.

They can go and mourn I dont care, what I find disgusting is the gvt calling for a WEEK of mourning. Clearly we know who they support.

The unions have to be put in their place.

I disagree. When last did you hear of this many people being shot in a day? It was a terrible mess.

Anyway, we're all entitled to our opinions.

Opinions? When last did you hear hundred of illegally armed thugs charging armed SAPS TRT members after a one week stand-off?

The horse has already been flogged to death but to summarise the bigger picture for you: 2 police officers were murdered (hacked to death) by unknown protesters whilst the officers where on duty and in the process of disarming them. That incident on its own should have triggered a massive reaction from Government to initiate drastic measures to subdue and break up the protest. I stand corrected, but I noticed very little reaction from Government on the latter, apart from some odd comment of the violence being condemned, etc; the police proceeded with a strategy to break up the protesters and disarm & arrest them systematically.

A day later a group of armed protesters in the process of being boxed and subdued by the police turn aggressive and 34 of them are killed by police gunfire. The Government, politicians & human right sympathizers immediately react with shock and horror to this incident and the President declares a week of mourning for the killing of the 34.

Indeed, we hate cop-killers, criminals, thugs, crooks, rapists, thieves and all other scum.

A flag at half-mast is for those worthy of the tribute only.
