As the title suggests, three ATMs (2 Absa and 1 FNB) were blown up and looted 4AM this morning (19 Aug 2012) at the little shopping centre in Highveld which houses the Spar, and other stores.

Woke up from the explosion, and listened to the gunfire for several minutes. I intentionally stayed awake to listen to the first responders, and there were none... I hope that it's just protocol for them not to use their sirens at 4AM otherwise they took more than 30 minutes to arrive at the scene.

I looked on all of the major news sites and none of them even mentioned the bombing. Apparently ATM bombings don't even make the news anymore...

They shot at a passing Chubb security vehicle with an R5 rifle. Bullet in the car, driver not hurt luckily. This was a serious operation.

Well the centurion ATM bombings are in the local newspapers though. There is definitely a syndicate operating, and as the local papers mentions, there's seemingly military connections (using military explosives and weapons).

So yea, i think maybe the police are keeping it under wraps until they get these guys. I think this would be like the 4th ATM bombing like in the last month in centurion? Seemingly the same group.

I'm just surprised by the greed and blatancy of these guys. Aparantly their last hit they got like R600k from these ATMs, but now they keep going, every week. And every week i read the police now got more evidence (video footage etc). Clearly they believe their prison sentence (if any) is nothing compared to the cash they are piling up...

Lies, all Lies!

The minister of police said crime is dropping, so this can't be true, he would never lie!

I see you read the Centurion record :D Unfortunately I don't agree with that strategy of the Police. They've used it numerous times in the past and it fails miserably most of the time. What's the use of having only a few eyes looking for the criminals when you can have half of the eyes in the city...

LOL!
It's a challenge to keep law and order.
And with that money they will only fund further bad tactics.

Chubb oke was brave. I wonder what would happen if something like this happened in New York or London or Wyoming... Here we pass it on.

In the US there would probably have been a prolonged shoot-out. London - not so much.

Wyoming - the Chubb vehicle would have been doing the shooting, with a couple of passers-by joining in, in their Chevvies, with automatic rifles.

There have been armed heists in other countries - I recall some big news in Belgium a few years ago.

There would be a massive police response and they would immediately block all the main arteries and try to cordon off the bombers. Helicopters would be dispatched to follow from the air. They would release information to the public and ask them to help in the search. They would put up posters asking people to come forward with any information. A reward would be put up.

None of those things happened... Looks like this will just be swept under the carpet, like everything else.

Compare our Police response (nothing) to this http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/wes...-shopping-centre/story-e6frg13u-1226452626875

This is hectic!

I know this centre well and there are no real security with easy access to main roads.
Wonder how long it is going to take until they take on Eco Boulevard Centre where 3-ATM's are located from 3 different banks next to each other.

A serious plan of action is required to catch and successfully prosecute a syndicate like this.

Wow! I know that centre as I used to work close by. Is Poorboys still there? I know the ATMs are right next to the Spar.

there was a bombing in lyttleton about 2/3 weeks ago.

they blew the FNB and Abse ATM's and left the standard bank :wtf:

it was the centre with the checkers, across the road from KFC
