Did Apple really neglect to put one in the new 15" (retina)?

More stolen laptops = greater sales volumes. Or they're just getting a cut from Maclocks sales.

Yes they did. Buy a rottweiler.

The Airs don't have these either, and haven't had one since 2008 when they came out, so the moral of the story is obvious. Want thin and light? OK, but some components will have to go.

It's a hole - they generally don't weigh much. ;)

Good one! :D But at this scale, every cubic millimeter counts, and space taken up by a hole is not being taken up by a battery.

Perhaps we have gone too far in the direction of thin and light. A manufacturer is never going win this game, though. Put in a Kensington slot and someone is going to complain that the space should have been used for a FireWire800 socket. Put that in and someone else will start on why there's no Ethernet ... and your MBP ends up looking like this. (That is one helluva machine, BTW. But it's not a RetMBP)
