Teen kills intruder and saves dad's life
2012-08-23 14:31

Cape Town - A guesthouse owner's son is the hero of the day after killing an intruder who was shooting at his father, it was reported on Thursday.

"I knew it was either him or us who would die," said Liam Kleyn, 16, from a hospital in Hermanus.

Canzius Kleyn, 47, his wife, Betsie and their son Liam, were watching TV at their guest farm outside Caledon on Tuesday evening when a man walked in and aimed a 9mm pistol at them, Die Burger reported.

Fight to the death

Betsie Kleyn had her pistol with her because she felt uneasy after a call earlier in the day when someone enquired about accommodation in the guesthouse, but refused to give her his contact details.

"He kept on asking whether we would be home in the evening," she said.

When he saw her pistol, the intruder started shooting at her. Canzius then jumped up and tried pinning down the man.

The intruder kept on fighting while Betsie fired at him. The intruder shot Canzius in the wrist and bit his ear off.

During this time, Liam went to fetch another pistol from the safe and killed the intruder.

"It’s scary to think of it now, but it was a fight to death."

"He’s our hero," Canzius said of Liam. "He stayed calm...and saved all of our lives."

The death of the unknown man is being investigated, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel André Traut said.

he is your "guest"!!!!!!!

well done young man. :)

Sounds like his wife should go for shooting practice.
Well done to the son.

That was fortunate... one bit that irks me:

Why don't people lock their doors?

You cannot shoot and kill someone for trespassing. You can, however, for shooting at you and your mother and dad to save their lives. Well done, son.

Can you at least shoot the bastard in both legs...maybe in the shoulder also just to make sure he is immobile and then call the police? If you hit a artery then so be it?

+1, I must go around checking that the doors are locked at least 3 to 4 times a day lol, paranoid? maybe, but we live in SA, something we just have to do. And well done to the guy, hopefully he doesnt get charged or anything like that, you never know.

This was someone over at the wilddog forum.read about it there the other day.glad they got the bastard.

It doesn't necessarily follow that the doors were not locked. The criminal could have broken in on the quiet and walked in.

Hope the kid gets counselling, killing someone whoever they may be can have lasting mental effects if left untreated.

so an attractive lady should be raped?
a rich man should be robbed?

For trespassing? Nope. Law says you have to ask them to leave and call the cops. Violence may only be used to defend your life or that of loved ones.
PS, I'm no lawyer, this is simply my understanding. Lawyers correct me if I'm wrong

The case will still need to be investigated though, and he will be probably will be charged but will be acquitted by the court.
As far as I know (and I don't know much) when someone is killed the killer is always charged, as it's up to the courts to decide it was self defence or not and to acquit him?

I didn't question the right of the teen to shoot the intruder. I was wondering about the questionable security. Prevention is better the cure is it not?

Either way I hope this deters people from staying there, no security and the only person who can shoot is the one not even legally allowed to do so :D
