The seven-time Tour de France winner said on Thursday he would no longer fight doping accusations by the US Anti-Doping Agency.

"There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough,'" Armstrong said in a statement posted on his website Lancearmstrong.com.

"For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999," he said.

USADA spokesperson Annie Skinner said the agency would strip Armstrong of his seven titles and ban him for life from competitive cycling.

In the statement, Armstrong did not concede having used performance enhancing substances during his celebrated cycling career. On the contrary, he said he would "jump at the chance" to put the allegations to rest.

But the 40-year-old Texan said he refused to participate in the USADA process, which he called "one-sided and unfair".

They should just legalise doping and let the man with the best dealer win. Everyone is doping, its a question of being ahead of the doping agency's testing methods. In fact, I heard during the olympics that the US (and China) are probably involved in systematic doping.

But I do understand why he is doing it.

Give this man a bells. He still comes out looking better than anybody else in this saga.
 
If they want to ban him and withdraw his 7 titles then they should declare all those races as non-events and not promote the second place finisher to first.

I think the whole lot of them were on drugs.
 
Overall one also has to look at what he has done for the sport. In my family he inspired my son to start and compete in the sport. He was an inspiration.

And how can a yank organisation strip a person of a french title?

I think some of the runners up in those races were caught, banned and the ones behind them promoted. It's farcical, the whole anti-doping business. The dealers are ahead of the testers by some distance.
 
Saw this coming. he said its one sided because they dont want to release witnesses names.they dont want to because he apparently has a history of intimidating witnesses. now instead of fighting the allegations, he tries to make everyone focus on the process,he even tried to stop the court case from happening on the grounds that its unfair, first failing then getting it postponed untill now.

now hes playing innocent. if he doesnt actually go to court and isnt actually proven guilty then maby he can keep all his money. why is he using everything in his power to stay out of court?

So many years after the event and they are still fighting. In my mind it does not matter if they strip him of the titles, he is still a legend.

LOL, sounds like a certain Jacob Zuma. Protests innocence but fights tooth and nail to stay out of court.

Its because they have new techniques and found a banned substance in his A sample from one of the years he won the tour. now they need his permission to open the B sample but hes refusing. if the B sample is also found to contain the banned substance hes officially guilty and he knows that.now they want to take him to court and he says its unfair.
 
I partially think its unfair, how many times has he been tested over and over again! Now finally they find something, my opinion is that you should only be able to retest something once and then it's over with(I don't know the process). He has as people said above done far more than for the sport than any other cyclist, has inspired MANY people, he did get through cancer, he did Finnish 7 races first, he was tested and came out clean.

Dragging his name through the mud won't change my opinion on him, I still see him as a good man and he will still be an inspiration to many!
 
Come on, all those okes were using. Lance just got caught out.

If they strip him, the titles will just go to the next doper in line.

Its happened a few times. Look at Bjarn Riis. he won the tour and then admitted to taking EPO a few years ago.

Like the whole T-mobile team admitting to systematic doping but not getting caught.
 
For some reason I do not like him at all - something to do with the choices he made in his personal life. Yes, I know he had cancer, but that does not change my impression of him.
 
One thing I do not understand about all this:
As far as I know, laws can not be applied retroactively (more specifically, retroactive laws have many many restrictions). So why can it be done in sports with doping tests?

They're not being applied retroactively. It was already illegal when he was a cheater cheater pumpkin-eater. It's not a new restriction he's being nailed for.
 
Anyone who respects what they've achieved in that arena would fight this tooth and nail instead of rolling over, unless they were guilty and found a compromise with the doping commission. They wouldn't strip him of his titles if there wasn't sufficient evidence that he was doping, and unfortunately for him, those were the rules and he was aware of them. He is no less of a cheat because of it, and he's no more of a role-model because he made it through cancer...

So how did the 100's of tests miss the already illegal substances he was apparently using? :confused:
 
Hectic. It is good though, even if late. Set an example. I think the records Phelps set in Beijing should also be scrapped since no-one will be able to beat those without those special costumes...
