View Full Version : The longest you've ever gone without sleeping?
I've been awake for about 27 hours and I'm completely wasted. Closing my eyes feels so good, I'd rather go to sleep than have sex or do anything...
Okay, maybe not quite yet. But I'll be there soon.
So how long have u gone for?

Round 30 hours, New Years once... so nice to get to bed...
The problem is it sometimes takes more than one night's rest to make up for it, it can take a couple days to get back to normal.
So tell us why you were up for 48 hours, was it like that cop movie?

Back in the dark ages, before the Internet blossomed, I was a normal kid. This was around 1989 and I was involved in a youth group and we had an event in CT. Anyways, me and some friends organised the thing along with the city councillor in charge, and we stayed awake for the whole weekend looking after things.
(you did ask...)
Wow, so you were up for almost 48 hours and then you had to fold newspapers all night, that's fcked up man.

Before you ask. Bank I worked for had 3 computer centres. One in CT and one in Durban and one in Jhb. Had to bring them together into one centre. Shut everything down from Jhb, flew to CT backed up everything and made sure backups correct, old reel tapes, set up centre in CT as a switching centre. Flew to Durban repeat. Fly to Jhb, restore all. Bring up mainframe and make sure all works.
PS. I collapsed in the shop on the way home at which I stopped to buy a coke for home. Got an ambulance ride to the hospital and then one home. Got home and crashed for two days.

* After missing one night of sleep, expect fatigue, reduced attention span and problems with short-term memory.
* After missing 2 to 3 nights, one will also suffer poor coordination, muscle twitches, marked loss of concentration, impaired judgment, blurred vision, nausea, and slurring of speech. Often one will experience episodes of microsleep (briefly sleeping for a few seconds at a time, without being aware of it).
* At about 4 to 5 days without sleep, expect extreme irritability, hallucinations, and delusional episodes.
* After about 6 to 8 missed nights, add slowed speech, tremors in limb extremities, memory lapse, confusion concerning one's own identity, unusual behavior, and paranoia to the list.
* After 9 to 11 nights without sleep, fragmented thinking occurs (beginning sentences without completing them), and prolonged episodes of unresponsive "conscious stupor."
Apparently, lack of sleep causes all of these adverse effects because it causes brain damage. During a normal day, the brain is slightly damaged by the body's metabolism, and by free radicals. When one is asleep, the brain engages a repair center which slowly mends the tiny injuries, restoring the brain to its full potential. During the deepest phase of sleep, called REM, it is believed that the repair center itself is repaired. But the longer that sleep is prevented, the more damage one's brain accrues, and the more sleep one will require to repair it. Too much damage, and it becomes irreparable.
Also there is a very rare disease called "Fatal Familial Insomnia" in which the sleep center of the brain is damaged and results in insomnia and all the symptoms above over a period of months and then eventually dementia and then ultimately death.

I'm a mild insomniac so I tend to sleep an average of 2-4 hours a night. Up till 3:30/4:30 and awake at 6:30. That goes on indefinately.
Most fun I had was staying up for 4 days straight. Had a huge project due and got my hands on a playstation with FF7 :D I remember on the 4th day moving through my house in a total dwaal. I sat and stared at a doorknob for about 10 minutes trying to figure out what to do with it...
Slept a solid 19 or so hours after that. I'd go without sleep if I could.

AntiThesis - I agree with you. One day the technology will exist when sleep will become optional. Then I shall only sleep when I want to enjoy my personal holodeck experience.
BTW, been up for around 37 hours now. Feeling ok, just a bit tired. Did you know, that the feeling of tiredness is psychosomatic? Technically, that could be turned off. However, Tibby is right that without sleep, the body functions degrade and eventually death will result.
Peace.

Lol! Yeah I have had a similar experience!
longest for me was from monday morning 5am till saturday 1pm. Was in the army. had to get everything ready cause of some fscking general coming for an inspection. even had to spitshine the dirt. But i cheated, had a medic buddy that gave me benzedrine :D
Felt like schit for about 2 weeks afterwards. Like flat coke
Debbie
14-06-2006, 11:57 PM
"Benzedrine was used to enlarge nasal and bronchial passages and it is closely related to other stimulants produced later, such as Dexedrine (d-amphetamine) and methamphetamine." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzedrine
You do know they were giving you something of the army's version of tik, right? And to scare some other's out there, it's similar to what they give you for flu.
I wonder if you are allowed to refuse such substances in the army...?? I had a lecturer who did his stint in the Isreali army, and the stories that came out of him....
BTW, rofl @ sig (and thanks to google).
I was once up for a weekend: got up on the Friday morning, went to bed on the Monday night. I haven't been able to get close to that since, and given the circs of how I ended up there, I don't mind not being able to!
BTW, as a followup to Debbie's input on military 'tik', meet modafinil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modafinil), more info here. (http://www.modafinil.com/article/soldiers.html)

pt a bunch of people in a room, tell them whomever stays awake the longest wins.
after 7 days, the last 3 or 4 contestants (I cant rememeber exactly) were put in a pitch black room and told to lie down, so an indefinite amount of time. The one who fell asleep last would win.
reducing the number of contestants during the first few days was done via competitions to do with memory and reflexes...I plainly remeber after about 6 days this man and lady facing off....each were told to count to 60 in their head, and whomever gets closest to the correct 60 seconds gets to stay in the house. I think they were 0.6 off the correct time. After 6 days awake.

A few years ago I went out with a guy who had served during the 'border wars' time period, and he used to be in charge of the drugging/vitamin-ing/whatever you want to call it. Again, interesting stories.
I find it the subject of drugs in the army all very fascinating, not just the pharmacological side of it but the sociological side of it - the confluence of pharmacology, neurology, "repressive state apparatus" (army), public morals and individual personal morals, and how all these aspects come together. This interest is deepened by what international and national law says on the subject.
And to add to this, it's even more interesting when considering the somewhat recent accusations in the USA that blame a widely prescribed anti-post traumatic stress disorder drug for a spate of 'family killings' on military bases (where a dude who has taken this anti-PSTS drug goes and kills his wife or kids or all of them).
(Just as a side-note, and to go even more off-topic here, I am not one to easily dismiss such claims that lay the blame of erratic/murderous/violent behaviour squarely on a prescription drug. A few years ago I spent several months on a mild Prozac prescription (20mg fluoxetine/day). I did a bit of research on it and found out that the makers of the drug have been taken to court numerous times for the alleged horrific side-effects of Prozac. Unfortunately, I think the US courts have never been able to find enough evidence to support claims that Prozac causes things like suicide ideation, that it makes certain users more prone to suicide, that it 'unlocks' violence tendencies in previously non-agressive people, that it causes wildly unstable emotions if a user is 'set off' by an incident that causes them anger, etc etc. I can tell you now that these side-effects are very very REAL, and very the reason I independently decided to stop taking Prozac. I've been Prozac-free for 3 years, 1 month, 2 weeks and 6 days now, and would never go back on it again).
Sorry, so off-topic here. Just the subject is a minefield of interest to me.

38 hours.
I'm useless at this kinda game, I really am - I need my sleep and when I'm tired, I can sleep almost anywhere.
Those 38 hours are when I left the UK to hook up with my buddy in Germany, back in '93. It was terrible.
I spent a good 15 of those hours in various coach/bus/train stations.
It all culminated, on about the 34th hour, with me running into a clear reinforced glass door in a bar in Cologne, bruising my knees and splitting my lip in the process - that was after about 10 beers - I ran into the damn thing full tilt in the excitement of over-tiredness and being in Germany with my good buddy.
I did once have insomnia for about 2 months, but that doesn't really count - for pretty much the entire time, I slept about 3 hours a night. I started losing touch with reality at one point.
I've got a buddy who suffers from extreme insomnia and also drinks too much - he's totally whack. He can go 4 days without sleep, but you don't want to meet him when he's on a binge - scary stuff. Brilliant mind, but insane after his bouts with sleepless nights and days...
Going from SA to Sydney and staying awake the whole time. Get to Sydney and sleep for 36 hours. The Time zone thing fcucks you up.

So for all the night owls out there... :)
My question is:
What is the longest time you have been awake? Without sleeping at all, no power naps, ect.
I'm going on hour 42 right now, woke up at on the 2nd of June at 8am and maybe thinking of watching a movie, before I'm off to bed. :p Not actually tired right now, as that has come and gone around around 14 hours ago.
Oh, the reason is I wrote a exam yesterday and haven't found a bed since then. :D

36 hours for me... Was working (coding) on an insane project. (1 programmer, 2 managers, 1 cranky client)
After 24 hours you can't dare to sit down to work out calculations. (That's what massive white boards are for).

I used to often stay awake the whole weekend from Fri morning to Sunday night way back when Cape Town's rave scene was pumping. Longest was from a Wednesday to Sunday during school holidays. Not doing that again, definitely not at 30!
Was just thinking this thread should be renamed to "who's taken drugs before" :p

A friend of mine who came to the UK, planned a weekend with a couple of other mates were all they were 'allowed' to do was drink jagermeister and redbull th whole weekend. They were not 'allowed' to eat or sleep. It did end with two chicks landing in hospital on that Sunday....Insane stuff. On the Monday when he got to work, His manager told him to leave as he was still reeking of alcohol and still drunk!

You're missing a bracket after "record holder" :) I included it in the quote above.
From that link:
It is often claimed that Gardner's experiment demonstrated that extreme sleep deprivation has little effect, other than the mood changes associated with tiredness (mood swings, short temper, loss of concentration).[5] This is primarily due to a report by researcher William Dement, who stated that on the tenth day of the experiment, Gardner had been, among other things, able to beat Dement at pinball.
However, Lt. Cmdr. John J. Ross, who monitored his health, reported serious cognitive and behavioral changes. These included moodiness, problems with concentration and short term memory, paranoia, and hallucinations. On the fourth day he had a delusion that he was Paul Lowe winning the Rose Bowl, and that a street sign was a person. On the eleventh day, when he was asked to subtract seven repeatedly, starting with 100, he stopped at 65. When asked why he had stopped, he replied that he had forgotten what he was doing.[1]

Fixed - thanks.
Jeez, people can be kinda cruel in the name of science:
In the case of rats, however, continuous sleep deprivation for about two weeks or more inevitably caused death in experiments conducted in Allan Rechtschaffen's sleep laboratory at the University of Chicago. Two animals lived on a rotating disc over a pool of water, separated by a fixed wall. Brainwaves were recorded continuously into a computer program that almost instantaneously recognized the onset of sleep. When the experimental rat fell asleep, the disc was rotated to keep it awake by bumping it against the wall and threatening to push the animal into the water. Control rats could sleep when the experimental rat was awake but were moved equally whenever the experimental rat started to sleep. The cause of death was not proven but was associated with whole body hypermetabolism.
Slept 5 hours Thursday night got up at 5:30 Friday morning finally went back to sleep on Sunday morning 10. So that makes it 52 hours? right? Was a horrible.... Did not even get a thank you!! Worst of all was that everybody else at some stage went home to sleep, when it was my turn it was just too busy and i had too stay, that was one of the times i fell a sleep behind the wheel.
Thank goodness I’m finished with the entertainment industry!!!

Well I was in the Organizing Committee for a student conference, so while there was kark loads of work, it was a heck of a fun time... people keep you awake:D The only reason was due to me being (among the only) responsible people there and lacking the energy to punch others in the face. When I finally went to sleep - I was woken up half an hour later, raced to where the problem was, found out they didn't need me after all - freaked out, broke the guys nose and went back to my room.
No coffee, just litres and litres of coke and a few red bulls.

I stay awake 30 hours quite regularly, hence the late posts. Bad habit, picked it up since matric finals, can't seem to have a regular sleep pattern. Internet and Series don't help!
What could the implications on my health be?
Mind you, i can sleep for 12-18 hours straight as well!

Anyway, apart from the LAN events back in my youth, the most exhausting experience of my life so far was working from 09:00 in the morning to about 05:00 the next morning to get 2 hours sleep and clean and eat something. This was repeated for about a week and half working on deadlines as well.
So:
Normal sleep for 1 week @ 8 hours = 56Hours
My sleep for that week @ 2 hours = 14Hours

Never again, I went out for a breakdown two weeks ago, no sleep Wednesday morning to Friday evening, drove home (300KM's) at 11PM and fell asleep/dozed off a few times to many behind the wheel during the trip home. It could have cost my, and maybe someone elses, life.
