should be our guide to where the smartphone and tablet wars are heading.

Win8 was already psyching up people before this enormous blow to both Samsung and Google (Android). That verdict paves the way for a "proper" alternative to iOS.

Remember only OS X is a 'true' alternative to Windows on PC.
 
I kind of think Android now is at a point where it's beyond the purview of Apple's patent protection. At least Apple hasn't indicated otherwise. It might be prudent for manufacturers to revise their UI skins though. HTC is pretty safe already because Sense has always been quite well differentiated. So is Motorola's worthless skin. LG might need to take a look though.

I feel like throwing my 4s out the window I'm so angry at Apple the company...but yes I am happy for windows because thats going to be my new OS very soon dumping my tablet and laptop for a surface type device with full windows 8

I agree with you - Apple with thier useless tech and over the top margins. The Surface looks intresting.
 
This article makes two fairly poor assumptions:

1. The apple vs Samsung case is over. Indications are that it isn't, based on the jury's sloppy delivery.
2. Microsoft will escape the apple patent vortex. Seriously? Are you that naive? If anything, it would be a worse battle, if ms history is anything to go by.

The question is whether oems will want to use an os which apple hasn't taken a shot at, particularly since wp7 doesn't hold much threat for apple in terms of current market share. The other issue is that ms decided to go in house with surface 1.0. I don't think it's the friendliest of gestures to oems.

How different is MS making its own tablet to Google owning Motorola.

We have already seen Samsung increasing its involvement with Windows Phone and that in my opinion is so that they cover for any risk involved with Motorola being their competition.

And, while the case is not over yet, what you fail to note is that it just might even get 10x worse for Samsung. The injunction (banning of sales of products) is still to be decided on, which is inevitably coming. The court case will be held on the 20th of September. Further, Apple will go after all OEMs using Android - so yes, the nightmare is only just beginning for Android.

Further, the risk of a court case is less for Microsoft because of its design and patent sharing agreement with Apple. Only its success will increase its risk.

I'd say it's pretty accurate. Where else are they going to go? Acer moaned about Surface and looking at 'other options' but what other options are there? Linux based desktops don't sell. Nobody wants them. Chrome OS is a joke. There isn't anything else.
 
Andriod is very far from being dead. Who cares if the USA gets left behind. They only hurt themselves this round.

Why is there a belief that the surface is likely to do well? What is this based on? The current tablet market is defined by Apple and they sure have it cornered - the surface is following the same philosophy, it is not bringing anything new to the table. It is nothing the Android competition have not done without success.

Do you think it will? I find it highly unlikely. It is going to be a big struggle for traction at this point.

Surface can replace your laptop unlike the pc dependent android and ipad tablets out right now.

You are joking right with all those restrictions etc HELL NO.I want a powerful non lego type device(in fact surface wont work either).
I want a proper hybrid ultrabook with a fully fledged OS like window 8.

I want native usb ports and i dont want to need a pc for syncing etc,current tablets are a joke i've had ipad2/3 and samsung galaxy tab,while the ipad is better its is still a headache to use freely.

Oh, so Ms are going after the laptop and PC market? The same market they make their money off? Leaving apple to continue its dominance of the tablet space? How odd.

1. The reason the surface and others could be a real threat to ipad : Windows.

2. And as it has been said elsewhere, a tablet could very possibly become the PC in the near future. There is virtually no reason to take an ultrabook rather than a Windows 8 Pro surface/others.

3. You would still need a licensed copy of windows on your tablet, so that also goes for the corporate environment. Besides, the most of MS's money has to come from office/exchange/server CAL licensing etc.

Linux has 1% of the market vs Mac OSX 6%. I would say that puts them on the map.
