Article: R50 million could be spent furnishing the new GCIS offices

As much as R50 million could be spent furnishing the new offices for the staff of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), the Star reported on Wednesday.

The GCIS is moving into new offices in Pretoria and has composed a 38-page guidebook for the bidding of the new furniture without a set budget, the paper reported.
 
The reason we have gone out on a bidding process is because we are unable to determine the exact amount it will cost.

Because when the tax money foots the bill, there is no need to worry about fitting budgets.

The sad thing is at the end of the day most of the offices are very bland and basic (as one would expect). Only the top job gets an awesome office, and the rest of the money goes missing.

We need to be querying why, now that Manyi has been fired, are they moving offices?

What was wrong with the old ones?

The new furniture – a 38-page shopping list – must come with “training and training manuals”.

“The furniture to be supplied should be brand new and no second-hand will be accepted,” says the list.

GCIS wants everything from desks and meeting room tables to patio furniture and coat hangers.

Electronic equipment is not included.

So you need a manual to use a desk? Maybe you should not have a job if you do not know how to use a farking office. Chances are that if you need a manual for a desk you Will not be able to read either.

I have a close relative who works for GCIS.
Their old offices are really cr4p. Their airconditioners don't work half the time - the working environment is extremely unpleasant. It's either too hot or too cold. They are too many people crammed into too small a space. They have extremely cr4ppy furniture and desks.

The move to the newer better offices and getting newer decent furniture will make it a lot more pleasant to work there and overall make it easier and more pleasant for them to do their jobs properly.

I agree R50million is a lot, but at least they are following a proper tender process.

The salesman said an IT employee's workspace shouldn’t cost more than about R14 000, including computer and software. The GCIS furniture, at the possible R50m for 500 employees nationally, runs to R100 000 a person, without computers.

It is more than just offices- probably extends to workspaces, boardrooms, rest/kitchen areas, presentation areas etc on top of offices. And I am sure they will be carrying over much of the computers and stuff from the old offices.

Hold on, hold on....I forgot the is the ANC in South Africa we are talking about. Ye budget will be blown before the half of it is done and then it will be doubled and they will recieve new computers that are actually crappy and overpriced but a comrades brother sold them so they bought them anyway.
