Hi there guys

Just got my MTN DATACARD. I don't get my Virgin Mobile Sim to work in it.

The card does pick up the VM Sim and shows GPRS/EDGE Virgin on top but I can't connect.

Anyone have settings that I can try out?

Thanks in advance

I asked this question in another thread, AFAIK the VM sims do not work in the data cards as of yet.

I can't understand why. It's just like there is a setting that is not right.

The Datacard does pick up the sim. Ask for a pin and register in on the network.
Then it shows the signal strenght and it shows GPRS/EDGE and Virgin on top of the Fastlink Software. When I go to settings and connection and make create a new profile it automatically puts in *99# at the number.

I change APN to Static and make it "vdata".
There is no username and password but when you go to MTN's profile there is a Username and Password.

Maybe we will figure it out somehow.

I'll just keep trying and keep you posted.

MTNDD is also helping. A big thanks to him.;)

See here

I am in the same boat as you. Have tried the AT string in the modem properties and fiddled with lots else.

Eventually VM data services told that there sims are defective-- they are aware of the problem and have ordered more and will replace them free for datacard users who are having issues.

I spoke to a very helpfull guy at Virgin Mobile called Darlington. He will be joining the forum to try and sort out or problems.

Did he say anything about the sims?

He also told me that the sims will be swopped out. I understand that it's not their problem. It's the make of sim.

OK -- at least the story is the same from more than one source. Lets hope they come soon as R2 per Mb is not cool.

Anybody had any luck with the VM sim in the MTN Datacard?

I'm still not getting mine to work.

Question has anyone considered that the MTN data card is networked locked just like cell phones via IMEI.

I would seriously doubt MTN or Vodafone would let these cards use other sim cards.

Any Ideas.

When a cellphone is network locked and you put another ISP's sim in it then it doesn't pick up the sim at all.

When I put a Virgin Mobile or Vodacom sim in the MTN Data Card then it shows in the Fastlink software Virgin or Vodacom. It does pick up the network. So that tells me that the data card is not network locked.

Am I right?

I don't think so... I have many time's succesfully used my Vodacom data card with a MTN simcard...

Hmmmm there is the question it may not be locked via IMEI but locked specifically to the MTN network via network protocols in the servers identifying which card is is in use the other question I have is I know my MTN sim card is 32K VM is 64K this could also be a factor.

I am using nokia's D211 data card no problems accept with manually configuring the APN which as you know vdata and no problems, but then d211 was configured to use any sim card accept 5 volt sims which I think are for satilete phones.

I was considering buying mtn's card but if I cant use it with VM that is no good.

I'm using a Vodacom sim in the MTN Datacard now and it is working perfectly.

Then the VM sim should work as well.

Look the way I see it voda and mtn have invested heavely in there respective networks, I cant see either of theses networks allowing VM to use there efforts at 50c a MB, while people with crontracst pay R2.00.

They would loose out in a big way it does not make finacial sense to let VM costumers on Voda or MTN.

Between them sims may be used on either data card because they both charge R2.00.

Thats what I think

Ok let try toubleshooting since redarrow has Vodafone card with MTN sim and Piesang has MTN card with Vodacom sim tets exchange error messages and setting and see if there are simalarities.

Thats all I can suggest.

I have a VM sim working in a MTN Sony Ericsson EDGE card.

Is the VM sim working in the Vodafone HSDPA card yet?

Not in the Vodafone or MTN Data Cards. The Sony Ericsson EDGE card should work perfectly because that is the card that will be available from Virgin Mobile soon.

compare config settings for those cards against the SE Edge card

Do you have software for your SE EDGE card or do you use a normal dialup connection?

If you go to Network Connections in Control Panel of your Win XP can you create a dialup connection using your SE EDGE card as a modem by dialing *99#

If that work then you can give us the settings.

Then we can also shut down the Fastlink Software en make a normal dialup connection with those settings and specify the MTN or Vodafone data card as a modem.

Hope this all makes sence.

Hi guys

I am in the same boat. I have the MTN card. I can get the Cell C sim to work. Right now I am typing this usingn the Cell C sim in the card. All I did was to create a new profile in the MTN software that had the APN set as "internet". Then hit connect.

So clearly the Cell C sim card works. The Datacard is not network locked and not banned from the Cell C ( and VM) network via IMEI or some other means. The problem is not on the Cell C network side as their sims and network work with the card. The error must be on the VM side. Either as they say the sims are defective or they have some other error- maybe authentication problems.

Why from a techical side does one have to use the AT string when one uses a phone as a modem to connect to VM dtata. One does not have to do this when one uses Cell C data for the same modem( SE W800). The problem might lie here??? Someone with techical knowledge please step in.
