Not sure about the CellC modem, but this is how it is usually done.

Install the driver that came with the device. There is usually a CD with a setup.exe program on.

After installing the driver, shut down your PC and insert the device. Now power your PC back up and Windows should detect the new hardware and install the driver.

Did the device not come with a manual?

Hope this helps.

As you probably know, you have to put your CellC sim in the card! Other network SIM cards could also work, depending on whether the card is network-locked or not.

The setup program usually installs a dialer application (mobile PhoneTools came with my EDGE card). Just open it up and you should be able to connect to the net from there.

If that doesn't work, there is another route. First try that and let me know if it doesn't work.

You might have to activate GPRS/EDGE (http://www.cellc.co.za/content/services/smartdatagprs.asp). You can do this on CellC's site (http://www.cellc.co.za/content/services/smartdatagprs.asp).

i don't know if the CellC card is network locked. I suggest you first get it going on CellC and then try VM.

CellC will charge you R2 per Mb.

the USB EDGE Modem is not network locked, on cell c you get charged R2 per megabyte on contract and pre-paid. however you can load a data bundle on contract. vistit cell c's website for more information. www.cellc.co.za

Ok

Here is my challenge.I only need mobile internet in an emergency, when going away etc.

I have a CELL C contract but it seems I have to buy one of their packages
if I am on contract, am I right there ? or I have to get another pre-paid account with CELL C, that means another card.

So I guess what I am asking is can I still have my current contract and also get prepaid for mobile broadband with CELL C and still keep the same card.

BTW## If I were to sell this modem, what can I get for it ?

Thanks guys

you can use your current contract for GPRS/EDGE. no need for "pre paid", the costs will be included in your monthly bill.

my GPRS/EDGE card cost around R1400...

Thanks

So there is no additional monthly costs if I go for the STD package.I mean
I don't have to use it for 5 months and when I go away for a week and use
lets say 10 Mb of data I pay R20 only .Is that correct, there is no additional costs..Is there setup costs ?

Thanks

Hi

According to the cell c website you donot have to be a cell c subscriber to get the modem but page 8 of the user manual says that only cell c sim cards can be used with this device.

Nice marketing isn't it.

Hi All

To clarify some points above:

1) Yes the Cell C mobile USB modem is network locked. It will work on Cell C and Virgin Mobile but not MTN and Vodacom
2) Cell C offers 6 smartdata options. The smartdata standard option discussed above is a general provisioning and carries no monthly cost. Data is charged in 1KB increments at R2 per MB and smartdata standard is available to all new or existing prepaid, contract and controlchat customers. Cell C also offer the following data bundles for contract customers: 25MB @ R39pm, 100MB @ R100pm, 200MB at R175pm, 500MB @ R350pm and 1GB @ R499pm.
3) All the above bundles are also available as either 1, 12, or 24 month contracts.
4) To activate smartdata standard please SMS the word "smartdata" to 0841559911 or select the activate button on the Airtime Tab of the USB modem dashboard. You can also contact customer care on 140. A billable call is required on all new lines before smartdata can be activated.

C for yourself does infact work for Cell C. And the USB EDGE Modem does work with a Virgin Mobile Sim card, The only problems is the 'internet' APN can not be changed in the Cell C Dash. So you will have to create a new connection in windows and in the advanced modem setting. Where is says 'Extra ini.....' you have to use the following string: at+cgdcont=1,"ip","vdata" :for VM.

Just as a matter of interest. When I signed up for a monthly 1GB databundle I was informed I had to take itemised billing, what purpose does this serve with a contract that won't be receiving calls or smsses?

Hi Arzy

I'm not sure the reason why the Service Provider required you to take mandatory itemised billing. It may be to subsidise the cost of the modem. Possibly query it on 140.

I'll try that. I purchased the modem cash though and took a contract out with the Cell C store in Eastgate. Will call 140 anyway.
