New Nokia Patent & My Utter Speculations

NokiaPowerUser reports that there is a newly patented design of the Lumia 9xx series.

This is most likely a fact.



Judging from designs in the said patents however, a number of issues come to mind given the information we have already of existing Windows and none Windows devices.

The first two things that came to my mind were:
- Hey, that looks like the HTC 8S (with the color at the bottom of the bezel)
- Hey, that looks like a Lumiaized (long) iPhone

Then the following rationalizations came to my mind.

1. Yes, it does look like the HTC 8S because Nokia and HTC struck a deal (out of court settlement) to use the 8S as inspiration for Nokia's high end phone. Remember Nokia was going to sue HTC for their design of the 8X, which looks very much like the Lumia 820.

2. Sure, the long phone has been made fashionable by the cult like iPhone in its new version. So, a long Lumia would make sense to be the high end version of the 9xx.

3. Verizon has a good relationship with HTC and HTC WP8 devices will be sold on by Verizon on release (come November 2012) so the speculated settlement deal between Nokia and HTC may very well have included selling Nokia Lumia 9xx devices side-by-side HTC WP8 devices. This means that Verizon's (apparently delayed) Nokia WP8 (9xx & 8xx) devices will be available as this patent and will be available at the same time as HTC's.

4. The long Lumia will most certainly appeal to iPhone buyers still sitting on the fence given the Lumia's undeniable superiority over the new iPhone.

5. The Lumia 920 is not going to be the highest end Lumia to be released this year. We should be looking out for information on what the specs of this patent Lumia 9xx are. Mind blowing in all likelihood - i.e. 20MP oversampling camera with all the bells and whistles the 920 has.

Just my thoughts.

I despise other phones being constantly compared to iPhones. Not your fault, it's that of Americanised tech media, but I still despise it.

I eagerly await an 808 Pureview type phone coming to a more vibrant ecosystem (whether WP or, can you imagine, Android) and it will definitely be in my sights. I still read about the 808 and wonder whether it should be my phone. I am always left feeling that something is lacking camera wise on my SGS3, and I'm sure I'd feel the same about most other current top end phones.

that looks crap. It will be a serious step back if this is how the Lumia series ends up looking. It looks like the basterd child of the SGS3 & I-phone 5.

The Lumia 920 is the best looking phone around.

That should rather be the next gen Asha phone or something

Sadly. Most consumers see anything that doesn't emulate or that doesn't work like Apple products as substandard.

I guess the approach that Nokia is taking here is "if you can't beat them, join them".

I agree to a large extent with your comment. However, what bothers me the most is that these renders look like the HTC 8S, which I think is ugly.

Nevertheless, below is a new render that shows an improved version of the patented Lumia 9xx:



This one looks much better in my opinion with chrome/aluminium highligts.

This makes the iphone look old and outdated, IMO. (And I thought the iphone looked purty darn good!)
