Hi

On Saturday 8 July 2006, BBC World were showing their programme Click and this featured the Jajah service. (www.jajah.com)

This was interesting as it allows for VOIP calls using normal telephone lines. Even people with slow dial-up or GPRS services can use Jajah.

I registered and started using the service yesterday. The following interesting observations:

1. Quality is excellent as you use your normal telephone to speak.
2. Cost is very low - Cost only R0.55 per minute to call landlines in Europe.
3. Calls to my brother in Holland who also registered with Jajah is free!!!

How does it work:

1. You register with Jajah
2. You get someone (like Absa) to transfer money into your Jajah account (10 Euro)
3. You open their website and log in.
4. You choose your phone number and enter the number you want to call
5. You click on connect
6. Your phone rings
7. You are connected to the other call and you talk
8. You hang up

The Jajah website indicates your call and afterwards you can see the cost.

Brilliant.

Hi

2. Cost is very low - Cost only R0.55 per minute to call landlines in Europe.

FireTelkom

Voipbuster is cheaper (even after increasing their rates three-fold)

Web-based callback (Phone-to-Phone) VOIP connection to most of the European countries is 3 euro cent per minute (= R0.27 per minute) plus a 3 euro cent connection fee.

And with Jajah there is no downloads - only open the webpage and you can make a call! Even people without internet access can do this in an internet cafee and schedule the call!

So I could just get someone in South Africa who I call alot to register and then my calls with them would be free? Difficult to believe as it uses a landline and must cost them quite a bit...

With Jajah you can use your cellphone to make the calls. The only thing is that when you use your cell phone, the calls will not be free as the free calls between users of Jajah is for land line calls except cell phones in the states, Canada, Israel, Taiwan etc is included. I think the cell phones that you can call for free is for countries where people on cell phones pay to receive calls.

The Jajah rates are as follows from RSA:
To the US, Canada China Singapore Hong Kong and Taiwan R0.52 per minute
Landlines to main European countries R0.52 per minute
Cell phones in Europe and other European countries including SA, Malawi etc. R 1.70 per minute.
Other calls R2.80 per minute.

The nice thing is however that you can change your numbers before you make a call. When travelling, change your landline to the landline where you will be and then you can call for free to other registered users.

I made calls for about an hour over the weekend for free to my brothers in Holland and London.
