Samsung sII/S2 has only had MTN edge speed

I occassionally see there is 3g speed when I visit other places. But at home I only have edge speed. unfortunately my data bundle ran out today so I tried to connect using my MTN simcard. Horrendous snails space speed of internet. I called the coverage person. He said everything seems fine by him it must be a setting on the phone and I maybe have to force 3g some how.. i also used the simcard in the dongle and although it connected it had green speed instead of the blue speed I am use to. all the other networks seem to be fine. I use 8ta for internet and husband used vodacom and both are lightening compared to the MTN snails edge speed.

just wondering what is the use of a smartphone when it has such stupid speeds?


from the network mode i see there is only gsm and wcdma, gsm only
and i tried some apn settings etc..

how does one get 3g speeds on the MTN network on a Samsung s2? Is there something I had to do on a setting that I may have missed?

Surely it's just a matter of the area you are in? You said you do get 3G speed in other places...

depends on which area u are in ..i have an S2 and MTN is hopeless never see 3G ...but 8ta and cell c always on hspa+ ...infact i get upto 1.7 mb/s on 8ta

MTN and EDGE, tell me about it. It was also like this for me in the two areas I frequent (home and work).

Only option is to move network. Go buy a CellC prepaid starter pack and give it a trial run in your area, and you could be well surprised. If it works for you, consider porting.

This is what I ended up doing, the results were like night and day. Goodbye MTN.

i wish it was that easy. I do have 8ta bundle i use. but the MTN is on contract and data bundles collecting dust cos you can't even open a browser it takes for ever.. very disappointing.

What area are we looking at?

I used to only get edge when phone was set to gsm only. Set it to the gsm/wcdma and try.

Move to another provider, I also had endless problems with MTN
