Telkom’s ADSL Cap Revisited

Thanx, Good to put all the facts out there for people who are too lazy to work out their monthly budget. ^^...

They might come up with the argument,'you pay for the lower latency over a fixed line' LOL...

Iburst and sentech might be cheaper but they haven't got coverage where in live, so sadly it's of to telscum i go.isp there are a wide choice of at least
 
it raises the question as to why they do not compete favorably on bandwidth rates when compared to services like iBurst and Mywireless.

This is because their wireless services are less than stable. True, Telkom does have the odd outage, but I've found it more stable than anything I've had in the past (and I've had both Sentech and iBurst before)

That, and iBurst and Sentech pay THEM for access. So even though they may not compete favourably, you have to keep in mind they're still making a killing either way
 
They compare favourably to Telkom's prices because Telkom tries to garner the maximum amount of profit possible, so companies buying wholesale bandwidth from them are still able to undercut their charges to a certain degree.

Also, Telkom's charges on ADSL speeds are arbitrary as it doesn't cost them a damn thing to have a line speed increased from 192k to 1mb.
 
Telkoms 3 GIG cap is totally ridiculous. If I run my 1024K line flat out for just 1 day that's over 9 GIGs of data. It's like offering a 6L 8Cylinder sports car with a 1L fuel tank. Just plain duh :rolleyes:

one thing you must keep in mind, unless you stay right next to the iburst stations, you will never be able to run your iburstt "flat out for 1 day" whereas adsl you will be able to run flat out all day every day.... iburst came to demo at my office a while back, the guy got about 300kbps and he said ja thats quite good, (that was on about 90% signal) i asked so its not 1mbps? he said it depends on the signal. so we went to my house, 98% signal, we still got average of 300kbps. so really you have to compare apples with apples. adsl 1meg line is actually 1 meg. the iburst will hardly ever reach 1mbps.

If you have a car capable of 250 k/ph and they catch you breaking the speed limit you pay a fine. However you can travel as far as you like and can. There is no brick wall suddenly jumping up if you exceed 30kilometers distance. Your throttle works instantaneously.

Telkom:

Possible speed at least 8000 mbits / second
Telkom limits you to maximum 1024 mbits/second
Telkom actually only sometimes allow you to reach your Telkom limitation.
After 3 or whatever gigabyte Telkom cuts your access and you cannot even walk.
Telkom also puts measures in place to ensure that your throttle only reacts after 700 milliseconds(latency).

i dont know what your point is. i would rather drive a ferrari 20 days a month than a Tazz 24 hours a day every day.....

I have had my experience with wireless. Actually had uncapped wireless. All I can say is I will not touch it ever again. Give me a nice fat copper cable into my house anyday :D
 
what does a mywireless modem cost?
iburst is to expensive(modem)
I don't want to lock me in a service with a 24 Month contract then I rather use my phone(3G)

Remember we talking about Telkom we have to make it as simple as possible to understand. They think a 1L fuel tank is more than enough and if you need more you are driving around too much :D

I beg to differ :) Since I got off Northcliffs BS and onto the Bramley North tower (9-10km's away according to utTracestar), almost all my downloads average over the 1000kbps mark, which is not bad for a 1mb wireless connection. However, I think cases like mine are extremely few and far between, guess I'm lucky.

Again, as the topic suggests cap vs price is the big hinderance on actually having a stable connection. 3gb on one of the cheaper ISP's aint all that cheap, in fact its still daylight robbery...

We all are agreed that the 3Gb cap simply is a poorly-thought out thing, and need to be abolished, and that the pricing and monopoly simply is just plain ridiculous.

...but I suspect that Telkom's going to jerk some strings soon...
 
How about we start toy-toy infront of Telkom it always worked in the past
