That they're getting it before South Africa is not surprising at all. Brazil has a much bigger economy that South Africa. Sao Paulo alone has a GDP bigger than that of South Africa.

The only thing that is surprising is that they didn't have official retail stores already.
 
There's also a Foxconn factory in Brazill where they actually make some Apple products. So why not save on shipping and sell them right there?

Probability is measured between 0 and 1. So in terms of that no, in terms of integers yes.

Also if they launched it in terms of GDP then we would have and places like Hong Kong, Denmark, UAE, Israel and Ireland will be behind us on the list.

A more accurate measure might be GDP per capita, in which case we rank below the world average by quite a bit.

Much larger population therefore many more people above it who can afford to buy the products. Plus it is an average. In Brazil you will find many people earning at or around a certain wage. In South Africa you have a massive amount of people living off of nothing, or next to nothing and then a small group of people earning completely stupid amounts of money. It skews the data a touch.

I am sure if you could find stats on the modal class income in Brazil vs South Africa there modal class would be much greater than ours.

What's interesting is that while Sony stores have been opening up in South Africa, they're actively closing down in Japan. Looks like we're at the wrong end of the trend on that too.

It's actually politically incorrect for Apple not to be in SA. SA is a beacon for the African American community and liberals in USA. Apple is usually the party of the latte sipping Democratic voter who loves his iPhone and Mac, although how removed that typical white liberal voter is from real black African Americans is probably indicated by Apple not being here. Which is strange because anyone who wants to do scientific research involving HIV and MSM (men who have sex with men) wants desperately to have some presence from South Africa.

Heck, South Africa is "the" success story in Africa. It is strange that Apple does not invest here, but as mentioned above perhaps latte sipping San Franciscans don't really care enough about us to threaten an Apple boycott.

There is a world of a difference between morality/philosophy, and profit margins. Heck, look at what happened to the whole "Kony 2012" campaign.

Well then why is Apple supporting gay marriage in the US and why did they remove the Manhattan Declaration app from their app store? Both issues are Apple pushing one type of morality over another, most likely to obtain support from the progressive college kid crowd and the LGBTI crowd.

I am BTW under no illusions that Apple is a for-profit corporate like every other such organisation. However, good PR is good PR and it works wonders for sales and profit, even among your own home based customers. Even a token presence in "Capetown, South Africa" ex-home of Nelson Mandela or Johannesburg South Africa would work. Such an investment would not cost them much but they could then spin it around and donate some macbooks to some school in Soweto or some LGBTI organisation here. And let's face it, the real struggle for LGBTI is in Africa, among the black LGBTI, after all, they're the ones facing corrective rape and physical abuse/beatings/killings and bear the highest brunt of the AIDS pandemic with the figures among gay men being the highest. One never hears of GOProud members being beaten up though.

I think they don't care because most of their clientele can't be bothered about it despite the catchy slogans most seem to sign on to or maybe Apple is just stupid.... nah.

The app was removed because they received numerous complaints and decided to act on them. They're not obliged to help some religious fanatics promote their agenda.

Supporting gay marriage doesn't require significant investment, putting up a store is not cheap.

Exactly. It's Apple enforcing one form of morality over another because of popular support for by elements of their clientele.
Exactly what I said. Whether it's religious fanatics or liberal fanatics, it's an issue Apple pushed for populist i.e. commercial reasons to boost sales.

For a multi-billion company which pushes the green aspect of its tech? Come on. It actually is a big deal to support gay marriage in the US, it could turn many people off using Apple products. But South Africa --- come on.... that would gain them support among everyone, it's a win-win situation. And their shunning of an entire continent because it is poor by their standards stinks of closet racism in the extreme and class-ism, any liberal could see that, or maybe some white latte sipping ones love their mac books more.... who knows.

My take is that the typical African American and typical white liberal have different ideals, or maybe Apple is stupid.

That is complete BS. I work for a company based in the heart of off-the-charts right-wing gun-loving anti-abortion god-fearing get-off-my-lawn Texas. And guess what? They all Macs. They all have iPhones. They all love their Starbucks.

If there is a stereotype of Mac users that's remotely accurate, it's of people who are generally more affluent. Able to afford these fabulous machines and still have spare change for a Starbucks latte.

Jealousy is a terrible thing...
