3.6 Mbps HSDPA here soon, 100 Mbps not too far away

If HSDPA manages to pull this off then iBurst and ADSL will have to somehow either compete or die.

I love my iBurst but there is no way I am going to sit on 1Mbps when Vodacom is offering 3.6Mbps...

Which is why I didn't get signed into a contract :)

When is iBurst increasing their speed?
 
I'd be happier if we did not have to pay R 2.00 per meg or the bundle could carry over to the next month..we live in hope...or maybe we are just dumb :)

It never ceases to fascinate me that nobody ever mentions that the 1.8Mbps currently quoted by HSDPA operators in SA is the capacity of the entire base station, not the capacity per user! If you are the only HSDPA user connecting to the base station, then you are in luck, otherwise you have to fight for capacity.
On the other hand, this is no different to the media hype about the capacity of a WiMax network - yes, you can do 84Mbps, but that is 6 14Mbps sectors of a base station, and you need all your users to be close to the base station.
 
All this speed is great but we're still paying a premium for bandwidth, whats the point? free sat3!!!!!
 
Ye, doesnt help you have all the speed in the world and will reach your cap in like 5 minutes and the price / mb is so damn expensive!!

All just marketing mumbo jumbo, you dont even get close to 1.8Mbps at present anyway, whats the chances of getting 3.6Mbps. :rolleyes:
To me it more seems like a best effort service, i.e. "Be happy with what you do get"
 
Yet another Bull Sh*t Bingo press release. Who gives a flying carp about their theoretical speeds.

It certainly does not translate to the man on the ground, I am back to working at the same speed as I did in 1998 using my N6110i.

This is not progress ............

What bs, in other words you can never practically get a speed of 1.8 Mbps on hsdpa.. I mean wat are the chances of you're the only one connecting to a base station, Unless its at 3 in the morning..

And whats the point of increasing the speed by the end of the year when the cap is still the same?
Id rather have a 512k connection with 5GB cap than a 1Gbps 1GB cap.. lol
Theres the possibility of finishing ur cap in 8 secs !! :D
 
even if mobile will be able to have 5.3 mbps or what... and there is a latency of 10 won't there still be like interferences between you and the isp ? the wind and so e.g ?
 
1.8Mbs is 225KB/s megabits and kilobytes.ran one of those hspda 1.8 yesterday and got speeds 25KB to 45KB that being without it's little external arial.not to bad but no where near 225KB! :(
 
as everyone says - this is useless at R2 per mb (or even 50c per meg).
Now, at R100 a GIG, it may be worth crowing about (in the current Telkom scenario that is).

Tokyo -- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced that starting today it will accept proposals from suppliers for development of equipment for Super 3G base stations and handsets.

DoCoMo will select one or more suppliers for each of these categories around October and aims to complete the technology with the selected suppliers before the end of 2009.

The Super 3G standard is expected to provide superfast downlink data rates of over 100Mbps and uplink data rates of over 50Mbps, low-latency data transmission, and improved spectrum efficiency.

Super 3G features highly advanced versions of high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) and high-speed uplink packet access (HSUPA), which are W-CDMA packet transmission technologies standardized by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

The 3GPP, a telecommunications standards body, has been in discussion to standardize Super 3G under the name Long Term Evolution (LTE).

DoCoMo, aiming to secure prolonged and efficient use of 3G spectrum resources, is an active member in the LTE discussions. DoCoMo believes Super 3G will allow the company to make a smooth transition to 4G in the future.

The 3GPP plans to release LTE's final specs in 2007, but has completed most of the basic system designs at its June meeting. DoCoMo is thus set to begin developing equipment for practical application of the Super 3G technology.

DoCoMo will accept supplier proposals until 5 pm, August 23, 2006 (Japan standard time).
 
Well it depends on(i'm making a guess here)
1. basestation data link back pipe size vs cost? [Telkom :( tho law now allows own links to be created though that means you do maintanance.]
2. num users which roam in and out.. and lnes are fixed so there is wastage in off peak time

and bandwidth prices also depend on Telkom.. cause link prices per site to network + main internet pipe must be paid reguardless of use.(assuming they, operators buy a leased line like service which needs expanding too with user demands)

Hi Geoffr, not true. Max number of concurrent HSDPA users depends on the available codes per site and I can assure you that a multiple of users can be connected at "1.8Mbps" (providing that the site is equipped with enought channel elements & transmission capacity, ).

Can't comment on the other networks, but not true for Vodacom. There was such a limit in the early days, but it was subsequently removed.

Sitting in the Vodacom office in Midrand (think how many HSDPA users there must be!), I often see 1.7Mb/s on the Telkom speed test, i.e. off-net.
