hi all,
hope someone can help with this query...we have an iburst desktop modem (usb connection) and would like to set up a wireless network at home (so we can connect the desktop AND a wireless laptop). can anyone tell me what wireless routers supprt the iburst usb desktop modem?

if anyone else has tried this, is it easy to do?

the only reason i ask such a simple question is that we contacted iburst about 3 weeks ago with this same question, and are still waiting for a reply. (in the meantime, they have tried to sell us a wireless access card AND additional contract so we can use the laptop. cheeky monkeys!)

thanks in advance for any help and advice!!

I suspect you would simply link the iBurst modem to the router via an ethernet cable (proprietary in the case of the MyWireless modem) check the iBurst forum, lotsa info there, on routers as well

thanks luke777. is it even possible to change the connection cable from my iburst modem? right now it is a usb cable.

ill have a look through the rest of the forum for suggestions on routher models.

nl101, if you have the standard desktop terminal (UTD), you will be able to connect to it using either USB or ethernet. Best way to see is by looking at the available connections on the modem.

If you mean that you have the USb only modem then you are stuck. No router (as far as I know) uses USB and will let you connect your modem to the router via a USB cable.

If you infact have a normal UTD, simply throw away your USB calbe and connet it to a router with some regulat CAT-5 Ethernet (lan) cable.

If you have to try and make it work with USB, all you can try to do is connect the modem to the PC vai USB and then to the router via ethernet. The try internet connection sharing to get the conenction to the other computers wirelessly. but this could be a hassle.

You can go check out your modem modle on the Iburst site, under hardware. If you have the UTD model you can connect using ethernet and will be fine for a outer. If you have teh slim remote like USB only model (its cheaper) then you cant use a router.

EDIT: actualy it seems you do get USB routers. but I doubt they are very common at all. So you should be able to buy a wireless router that will work with a USB connection. but some routers only have a USB connection to be used for connecting ot hte PC, and not for connecting a modem.

There are routers that have built in USB port. The problem comes in that those USB ports are designed to only share a flash-disk\removable HDD (via an FTP server running on the router) or if the router has a print server, it can also accomodate a printer.

I really doubt that you will find a router with firmware flexible enough to allow the loading of the iBurst Modem Drivers so that the router can auth the modem via PPPoE. Even though most routers are running various distro's of linux, it wil be pretty much impossible to get the drivers loaded.

Your best bet is to run a WiFi card in your pc, to which the modem is connected. Run the WiFi card in Ad-Hoc mode, and use Internet Connection Sharing. thish should solve your problem, with very little expenditure, and a few problems (M$) ;)

^ yep, what he said.

Im shure I did however find a modem to be used with either "a USB or ethernet ADSL Modem" which should work with Iburst too. But it will be hard to find and probably expensive.

Just hookup a Ad-hoc wifi card and leave the router out of it, will be a good bit cheaper too.

thanks for all the advice guys. i finally managed to get through to iburst again. they said that any PPPOE compliant wireless router should work with their modem. would have to change the USB connection for an ethernet connection, and then should be ok. they seemed to think our modem came with both a usb cable and an ethernet cable, but i dont remember seeing a second cable in the box. will keep you all posted...but really do appreciate the help so far!

the person we spoke to at iburst weeks ago was not so convinced about an easy solution, but we shall see...

Well it sounds like you have the normal UTD modem. Ven if they didnt give you a ethernet cable, just go buy one for like R10. Any normal network cable will work.

You really dont need to bother with iburst for this, unless they are actually going to some how change your USB only modem to have ethernet too, but i doubt it.

At the risk of sounding racist, is your UTD black or white :p

As a last resort, you could setup Internet Connection Sharing. Keep the USB plugged into the desktop and then share the connection. But remember, the desktop will have to be switched on if the laptop wants internet access.

It's not a pretty solution, but it's better than nothing.

The light grey one should be the UTD. SO you are in luck, it will work. ust get a ethernet cable or find the one they gave you (if it exists) and plug into a wireless router. Done.
