Government only sees the short term benefit of Telkom and the handsome dividends.
I don't know why we bother.
Government's objectives are clear and we are wasting our time?
Government and the people that run Government have no vision.
Who is clinging to the past now? That statement would have been true while Telkom was still stateowned, but it's a bit outdated I think.
The state should not have any business relations what-so-ever. The state is only there to look after its citizens, keep order, etc. The country is its business. Having shares in private companies only helps people to have a distrust in any decisions they make regarding that industry.

The only reason it was SEMI privatised was to provide a massive cash injection for the state.
To privatise (or semi privatise) a company in a competitive market is one thing, but to do this in an environment that legally protects this entity as a monopoly, without an effective watchdog keeping it in check, while we drift further and further behind the rest of the world in terms of technology, services and infrastructure, is entirely another kettle of fish.
I've got 3 billion reasons to believe that Lyndall Shope-Mafole's tsunami story is a load of bullsh1t
and its all about the money and their own pockets at the expense of technological advancement.

Licence fees - yes
Taxes - yes
Dividends - absolutely not.
Governments income must come from taxes and similar income. These things are aprovedby parliament in a thing called a budget. Government taking income from dividends and other non budgeted sources means that the playing field is skewed to the point where the government no longer understands its function.
It is not a profit making entity. It is elected to manage the affairs of the electorate.

I am so hoping South Africa doesn't take the same path as the rest of Africa where Government's run the country like their own little fiefdom's.
here we are worrying about ADSL in a stupid country like ours, when 100s of ppl are dying of terrorism (india, israel ) and even more ppl are dying with occupation in iraq, lebanon etc. And not to mention the tsunami that just happened in indonesia... And were worried about adsl....kinda unimportant when put into that context.. I mean ffs who cares about adsl / broadband internet if we have ww3!!

I agree completely with them, if I had a cash cow like telkom, I wouldn't want to sell it either. Especially now since they have taxed us to death and made it cheaper to walk than drive to work.

So for the love of all that is good and holy, if you want to have telkom as a national asset let it do something good for the nation for once in its miserable existence!

However, there are somethings that are more important...
And with regard to crime etc, I think even ull agree with me that the number of people who have died due to terrorism (USA, India, russia, israel, London, Spain) far exceed those of crime/poverty... And dont forget the number of ppl that have died in IRAQ and Palestine....You cant even compare that to our situation....
Right now id probably say SA is one of the safer places to live.. even with the crime rate

That's a bold claim. I'm not too sure there are more deaths from terrorism than poverty and crime. Poverty and crime has far reaching consequences than you think. I would think they cause more deaths and suffering than the current wars that are going on.rendan said:

And what i meant to say when i started (before all this talk about poverty came up) was There ARE more important things than broadband internet in SA...Be it poverty, aids, terrorism or WW3...
While decent sa broadband WILL help in reducing poverty/ create jobs etc... Its not worth spending all our time talking about it....
