Truth of the matter ...
Firstly, I applaud Dr C H Stuart on making his frustration public. I just hope Telkom doesn't cause further problems as payment for the embarresment (even though they caused it).
Secondly, I'm impressed that Dr Stuart also managed to get some publicity for the Guest House - that should help offset the cost of the AD
I hope that the DoC is pleased with how their "national asset" disregards adequate levels of services or even basic courtesy to the consumer in South Africa.
There are far too many stories of poor services running around. It's truly tragic when Telkom's research agency calls me the first time to enquire if I'm satisfied with the 'resolution' of the noise-fault on my ADSL line after 3 weeks and the problem still existed. It's even worse when last night (after a further 3 weeks or so) they call again to speak to the "person that was present when the Telkom technician came to the premisis to repair the fault" and the problem still exists!
After several insistent calls on my part to find out what's been done - I found out the problem is the capacity / quality of the cable from the Telkom Exchange to the streetbox in my area - which btw is still producing the noise! I tried to explain that either streetworks done 1.5 months ago damaged something or that Telkom simply has to replace / upgrade the cable and only that will solve the fault I reported. During the day ("Standard" hours) the quality of the line is not suitable for ADSL. Afterhours, the line is capable of up to 470kbps on a 512kbps package - just that irritating noisy tick every second causes packet loss / latency.
By somehow 'closing' my fault without informing me, it clearly shows Telkom's interest in spending some of the planned R30 billion Capex on upgrades they're touting like some miracle cure to their service-delivery woes.
EDIT: I forgot to clarify that before the 'noise' started I was getting average speeds between 450kbps - 470kbps (
without noise or latency or any lost packets) on a good night. Since then, it's dropped to an average of between 420kbps - 435kbps (
with noise + latency and lost packets).
