This is purely for information and the intention is not to turn this forum into a handset one.
It's a broadband forum and my knowledge on handsets do not extend past cutting and pasting the following information from a weekly report. :)
PLease note, this is only a technical update on the network testing of the phones and in no way implies the phones will become available in the retail channel.
Obviously the more you request a specific model, the better the chance that it'll be made available. To do so, contact the Vodacom retail channel who will feed your requests to the procurement channel.

Tahir can probably answer that, but once it passed (and it is actually released), probably a few weeks to filter down the channel.
Had a lot of requests for the ETA of this handset, thus this new thread.

Thx go out to all my homies ... and ic!! ;)
This is purely for information and the intention is not to turn this forum into a handset one.
It's a broadband forum and my knowledge on handsets do not extend past cutting and pasting the following information from a weekly report. :)IMO an excellent idea to reuse this thread to communicate status changes in Vodacom's handset testing & approval :).
v3g, it will add to your weekly workload - perhaps a longer-term solution would be a section on vodacom.co.za where people can lookup the status of any particular handset considered for testing & approval...

We're working on a extensive on-line 'self-help' capability, the idea being to get you guys to look up info before you need to revert to asking. Saw the initial demo this week, quite nice.

I am also waiting to get this Sony Ericsson when it becomes available. Anybody know when that might be?
I saw Supersport giving them away as prizes during the Tour de France broadcasts, so it is probably approved.

V3G, is it true the N80 is not branded with VLive when buying it through Vodacom on contract?
And also the reason why it is so expensive?

' Dude... Been waiting well over a year for that blinkin' handset now!!! And, on top of normal anticipation and a desire to upgrade, my primary handset (P900) was swiped about 3 weeks back (or so) - leaving me completely buggered until I get a PROPER replacement!!!
' Of course, I define proper as: "that which I need which properly allows and enables certain crucial functions and facilities in the most user-friendly and efficient and acceptable manner."
' In other words, I'd rather wait the few days or week or whatever longer to get the device I know will satisfy my wants, needs and desires, than replace it with something that will fall short.
' The P990 is that device.
' Which leaves me in a position in which I find I'm now really rather desperate for the blinking thing to be freely available!!!
' I'm sure you can see why I entered the scream in my previous post. And why this is rather a sticky point, where any and all additional information about the situation / status of this handset will help sooth me significantly. <VBG>

' Hehe... I hear ya!!! When I originally bought my P900 I actually went SIM-free purposely and bought it straight-cash - VERY soon after it was released, in other words at a ridiculous price!!! I had intentions at the time of going month-to-month with a contract and had other concerns about not wanting my primary device to be attached to a binding contract and so-on...
' BUUUUT... I had intended on just going with a contract-upgrade and pay the difference this time around when getting the P990 (my contract was up for renewal a while back already and I've been putting it off in anticipation of the release) due to the very fact that I intended on getting it ASAP and the expected pricing so near to official release.
' HOWEVER! While I'm still at a loss for whether I actually walk away from the situation slightly better off or slightly worse off (I suspect the latter!), at least concerns about prices aren't really a major issue for me now. Insurance is covering the replacement (I did insure for the full, heft original amount I spent on the P900) - so really my only concern is for the bleedin' thing to be available and I'll be snapping it up post-haste!
' <Shrugs>

Handset firmware.

To test; quick quickly, days rather than weeks.
Then to get stock into the shops, again dependant on the supplier.

Yea, what is the ETA on the phones? Any progress? When? 8) I cant wait to get my hands on the TyTN!! cant wait!! :D
I have the TyTn that I imported and use on VodaCom. The only problem I have is that voicemail notification smses aren't sent through. Apparently this is also a problem on the Vodafone networks with the 121 voicemail service and the TyTn users are hoping that a firmware upgrade will solve this problem. Otherwise I don't see why VodaCom wouldn't approve the phone. Oh i'm also running the JasJam firmware on my TyTn as it's faster and mroe reliable.

Thanks for the info Ari - we will just have to wait on the networks now. It seems Leaf is happy enough to be taking orders for the phone now and I am sure the networks will get it sorted out soon.
Is the Jasjam firmware different to the HTC firmware and in what way?
I hope they realise the voicemail problem, otherwise i feel sorry for the poor call centre. The Jasjam firmware runs slightly faster and the skin is blue instead of the HTC Green which does get a bit eyesore after a few minutes :)

Your voicemail will work if you use the correct ROM ... there seems to be a hiccup with the ROM itself ... The telstra JasJam ROM works fine for voicemail notification ... as well as the Cingular ROM but the Cingular ROM flips a couple of keys on your keyboard and Video calling has been disabled ...
All in all The TyTN is a pretty cool device and it really holds onto the HSDPA connection ...
Well I must tell how frustrating it is trying to get any info out of Vodacom on the TyTN. My upgrade on my talk 500 is due and I've called the 111 number about three time in the past two days only to hold for about 20 minutes at a time and not get called back when I use the call-back feature
I've called a Vodashop, the Vodaworld Vodashop and Smartcom and nobody has any idea what I'm on about
Does anybody have any more up-to-date info?
Thanks.

No probs .. hang in there then and wait for the networks to pump em out .. The inquiries for the TyTN is growing ... The networks should be punting them soon .. But in my personal opinion i dont think they are to keen on it .. considering the fact that you can run skype on the device ... @ 500 Kb/per min data usage ... you effectively looking 25c p/min phone call ...
We will probably look at some serious packet shaping before they come out

Both the TyTN and the JasJam are still in testing and have not passed yet. No ETA.
I've stopped posting updates on mobile terminal testing status in this thread as some forumites used the information I posted here to become extremely abusive towards Vodacom, Vodashops, etc after I posted a phone was approved and it did not appear quick enough in the retail channel for their taste.
So apologies to those who found the info useful. Unfortunately in an open forum these idiots will appear and spoil it for everyone.
Hey Everyone, below is an email from Leaf concerning the email notification problem on the HTC TyTn when used on the VodaCom network. I hope VodaCom sort this out.
********************
Dear Customer,
This is a common problem with Vodacom. There are two types of notification for your voice mail messages. The phones only support the new version; and Vodacom only uses the older version. As soon as Vodacom upgrades to the new notification type they will come through to the phone; but until then there isn’t much of a solution.
Sorry for the inconvenience; however this is not a permanent problem.

There is a little problem with the 121 voice mail notification on the TyTN ..
Apparently the 242 advanced mail box option works .. but i havent tried it ..
The problem is with the ROM itself ... The prtocol version is the problem ...
But this can be rectified with the correct ROM ... Mine works fine with the 121voicemail notifications ...
one of two options are available .. use a different ROM ... there are a number of ROM's but only 2 of them work ..
Second option is to use a third party application which automatically SMS's the caller when you do not respond to his/her call .. in addition to this notification the date and time of the call and the SMS notification gets added to your calendar .. So you have a date and time for the call ...
Which two Roms work with the 121 system? Does VodaCom have the 242 voicemail? I assumed only Vodafone has the older 121 and newer 242.
I've tried both the HTC and Imate Roms and both have the voicemail bug.
Tnx

Apparently Vodacom does support the advanced mail box feature ( 242 ) it is an optional extra ... not quite sure what it costs ...
Cingular ROM version 1.34 works .. but seeing as they are not big on Video calling in the states the camera Api has been disabled for video calling ... Video calling is not exactly big here either .. down side is the keyboard layout will be changed ... things like @ and ! have been flipped around ...
The other ROM ( secret for now ) works fine with no bugs except the radio stack for me is not as good as the original ROM ... it works but the original radio stack performs much better ...
I have stuck to the original ROM .. i use a third party application which SMS's a pre prepared response .. as well as noting the missed call in my diary ..
For me this approach works well ... i now know exactly what time i missed the call, who it was and it sync's to my calendar
Don't know if this is the right thread but I got hold of a chap at Voda upgrade dept. yesterday who actually knew what the TyTN was. I will have to pay in R3489 on my Talk 500!
I think I may just go with a SE P990i.

Just received the following message from Leaf on the notification problem. HTC admits to the problem and are fixing it.
-----------------------
Hi,
I have spoken to HTC, they will address the issue immediately.
They are aware of the issue, as they had similar issues on other networks, so a fix should be with us in the next few days.
I will let you know as soon as we get it, and the steps that need to be taken to get the customers sorted out.
Also of course all future devices that come to VC will have the fix on too.
