Top officials challenge stadium estimates

The City of Cape Town's cost estimates for building a World Cup stadium at Green Point have been challenged by local organising chief Danny Jordaan and Premier Ebrahim Rasool.

Both welcomed the council review that confirmed Green Point as the best site for the planned 2010 African Renaissance stadium.

But they queried the city's cost estimate of R4,3-billion (including infrastructure) for a state-of-the-art stadium in Green Point, or R3,6bn-plus for a basic, no-frills version (also including infrastructure).

Jordaan said: "What we are happy about is that the matter as to where the stadium in Cape Town will be has been resolved.


'Not worried that construction would be delayed'
"Substantial progress has been made and the City of Cape Town has done thorough and very professional work.

"Now we will have to deal with the cost breakdown."

Jordaan said the original cost estimate for a Green Point stadium had been R1,2bn, and he was not clear as to how the city had come up with the new figure of R3,3bn for the construction costs.

Why are these people so clueless?
 
If its only R1,2bn we could build it yesterday!

A mate of mine works for a leading chartered surveyors who got the plans for the stadium last week, and he reckoned that the R4,3bn figure was accurate...

Surely it isn't only the stadium's costs?

What about the road infrastructure and public transport system.
What is that estimate?
They would need to ensure safe pedestrian walk-ways from the Station to the Waterfront and from there to the Stadium itself.
Also the transport infrastructure needs to be upgraded as well for the tourists?

The more I think about the situation, the more I can add on to the bigger picture of what is needed for such an event.

While we are still waiting for our own better roads and infrastructure the Municipality is able to fork out 400million?
If Ebrahim Rasool and the people that are on the "same page" cannot come up with the money then they must offer Newlands and be done with it.
We can ill afford the 400 million already.
National Government the instigator of the whole Soccer Bid should dig deep into those over-flowing coffers of public tax-money.
Trade in President Mbeki's jet for a cheaper model.:rolleyes:

I am not sure. I will ask my mate exactly what that quote costs. I should hope that you could do quite a lot with more than four billion rand though!!

I don't think that Newlands would be the worst thing. I was there the other night watching the Man United Chiefs game and you could see that not THAT much would have to be done , to the stadium at least, for it to host a World Cup game.

Green Point does need a lot of work, but i can see why they picked it over Newlands purealy on location. I am really hopeful and looking forward to the upgrades that will be made to the stadium and to the surrounding areas' infrastructure.

Where we are going to get the money though remains a big issue. I foresee taxes going up even higher :( :mad:

I'm pretty sure that most of a stadiums income comes by means of advertising?

Trevor Manuels 50c surcharge/tax added to each liter of fuel sold should do the trick.

it such a waste rather just upgrade the existing stadium and use the balance of the money to extend the public transport in Cape Town...

Uh, i fail to see the logic in this 'calculation'. A stadium does not consist of just 68000 seats, there is the actual building costs, the pitch, the stands, the building structure. Not to mention things like surrounding infrastructure, parking, walkways, etc.. And many more more details which all add up to building a stadium. You dont exactly rock up at a stadium and see 68000 seats lying on the ground

It is the facility cost per seat - the stadium has to make enough money per seat to cover capital expenditure for each seat.

I agree, there is a lot more than just the cost of the seat such as bars, loo's, roads etc.

But for this kind of money, it should be possible to build a basic house for the cost of each seat capacity in the stadium.

Income is derived from "Bums", advertising, TV-rights etc.

To cover that kind of money you really have to earn big bucks to repay the capital.

On top of this comes maintenance and management costs - it is pretty expensive to maintain a pitch.
 
you forgot to count number of games maybe? Anyways R3bn is from Telkom so its R1.5bn cost.. ;) or where did that money go?

A laugh a minute - 40 billion, no problem - why wait for the WC?
 
This gub is so adamant on creating this false image of south africa abroad. The money being thrown at 2010 is a spectacular example of how they care about the citizens of the country (or dont care? :confused: )

Somehow I doubt that this money will be used for protecting South Africans, or that the security related "jobs" will be kept in place.
