Hi Everyone,
I'm hoping one of the people here can answer a few question about the 1Meg ADSL over fiber from IS.
1. How big an improvement is the connection via the fiber instead of the satellite.
2. Does anyone have an idea what the contention ratio are?

Hi francoistk
I hope i can help. We have a 512k IS ADSL over fiber after having the satellite option that wasnt working for us.
1) It is huge.
For example, with satellite, if i was pinging say www.mweb.co.za i'd get 52ms average. But pinging google.com the ping times were average of 1000ms+.
Once we went fiber , those times drastically improved. for example, here is a trace to google.com :
[root@ns postfix]# ping www.google.com
PING www.l.google.com (216.239.37.99) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 216.239.37.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=242 time=308 ms
64 bytes from 216.239.37.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=242 time=309 ms
64 bytes from 216.239.37.99: icmp_seq=2 ttl=242 time=311 ms
64 bytes from 216.239.37.99: icmp_seq=3 ttl=242 time=313 ms
64 bytes from 216.239.37.99: icmp_seq=5 ttl=242 time=303 ms
2) I have spoked to Warren, our assigned account manager, and our contention ratio is guaranteed 1:3.
Have fun

From the IS ADSL uncapped document
What is the contention ratio? And what is the realistic bandwidth I can expect?
We cannot guarantee any contention ratio because of the fact that there is Telkom involvement in the exchange as well as the ATM cloud. We would look at about a 30:1 contention on the internet breakout.

That's impossible! Your contention ratio is more like 30:1 or 50:1

TheFly has it spot on. You will experience a huge improvement on the latency side and more stable connection.

IS may allow 3:1(which i doubt) but Telkom is enforcing ATM contentions of near 100:1 I would not be surprised, just look at end month madness, ITS not because of to little international bandwidth but Id guess because of the increase of users and then possibly the contention hitting max.
