Wireless Broadband: Who are the best providers?

Hey All

I trust everyone is well? I wasent to sure as to where this should go but his looks correct.

My g/f's family is currently on 56k dialup and want to get broadband, they saw the mweb ad the one day and thought "wow thats cheap" but after me showing them that it isnt so cheap, used saol prices and cap limit vs mweb price and cap. So now they want me to find a more affordable solution, I was thinking wireless connectivity but since I am new into this market I am in need of some help. I would prefer wireless mainly because (if I remeber correctly) it works out to be cheaper than adsl? and also because I am going to be moving into there house and would like to setup my machine to use there connection obvisouly I will be paying them rent and my using the line as well.

So what options do I have? Oh yes the location is Cowies Hill in Pinetown.

ADSL in general should be cheaper than wireless, all things considered. I would however first check signal (as previously mentioned) in your area before going wireless. If you go ADSL you can still install a wireless router and have the freedom to roam your dwelling. At this point in time I believe the wireless solution only to be of real value if you need to 100% mobile.

If I am not mistaken the HomeDSL384 solution from telkom is getting cheaper?
 
Okay another question...

Currently they have 2 lines coming into the house, one for fax the other for phone calls. Now if we decided to go the adsl route could we not elimante those extra lines and just have the one line? or would they still have to have the other one for fax? this is another reason why im looking at wireless because i dont want them to have to pay for a 3rd line rental.
 
Yes, you will only need one line. ADSL will support both voice/fax and data at the same time. I am still unclear as to way they have 2 lines?
 
long before i came in the family so i am not sure why they have 2 lines. but i think it was because they didnt want to be talking on the one and when a fax came through get disconnected.

probably last question with regards to adsl now which service providers offer the "best" overall package? i only know of imaginet, saol and mweb...
 
At the end of the day most of the options are about the same, some with better caps, others have better price. You need to understand what your requirements are going to be and get the right one. I have a 3gig telkom account (512) in have not yet had any problems (18 months).

I would however recommend getting your own router as most ISP tries to "lock you in" by giving a free router if you sign a 12/24 month contract. The benefit is that you can choose to go somewhere else if you dont like the service.

PS If they recieve a lot of faxes you can also opt for FAX2Mail solutions.
 
Whats FAX2mail option? never heard of it...

I will try to get own router there are ones that are wireless at the same time right? or would i have to buy 2 routers one for adsl line and the other for allowing me to connect in the granny flat outside via wireless? I will look at the different ISP's will probably go saol as they seem to have a good price/performace option...
 
All your faxes are converted to email and accessed that way. Yes, most routers these days will support wireless. I have a WAG200G (Linksys - home division of Cisco) www.linksys.com they retail for around R1000 incl. I know a lot of members that prefer the Netgear and Billion range of products. I have Netgear wireless cards and they work 1000%. In short do your homework and things will be a lot easier and less $$$$$$.

try openweb, webafrica and look on the forum for more options. remember not to sign any contracts. go month to month so if you need to move you can nd dont have to pay the rest of the 24 month contract.
