New York power blackouts

While going through the deluge of SAIX noticeboard failure and progress reports, I noticed that they blamed NY power outages for the NY-HK line being down, so of course first place to go is Google.

Seems many NY people have been without power for up to two weeks :eek: imagine that?

I can't imagine most of the forumites being without their PC for more than a day or two tops, never mind two weeks! :D
 
One of the big problems is the underground cabling.

It is nice not to see the cabling from an aesthetic value point of view, but when something goes wrong it takes a lot of extra work trying to find the fault as it is not exposed.
I read that the problem is a series of faults and the more they look the more they are finding. :)
 
man it must be hectic at night, a huge city in the dark :eek: also if you live in a tall building. If Jhb lights went out for a few days imagine the chaos.
 
Difference is: investigations are made, reports are written: heads roll. Pity we don't have some of that around here.

And it is mid-summer over there.
Imagine all the food stuffs going off.
Wonder who is going to pay for that mess.

I have read that Koeberg Reactor 2 is slowly going on-line.
By the end of this week both Reactors will be running apparently. :)
[Cape Town, 14 July 2006] Scheduled maintenance of Koeberg’s Unit 2 is still proceeding according to schedule; the unit is in the process of starting up and re-commissioning of various systems has already commenced.

“We are confident that full operational capacity will be restored to Unit 2 by the 4th week of July as indicated in the Integrated Recovery Plan”, said Jacob Maroga, Eskom’s Managing Director (Transmission).

Unit 1 is generating 900 MW of energy at full capacity, and no major technical risks are evident at this stage. As a result, load shedding has not been necessary in the Western Cape since 22 June.

Mr Maroga appealed to consumers to continue to use electricity sparingly.

Power demand was projected to reach an all-time high and prompt some voluntary blackouts, according to the Independent System Operator, California's power grid manager.cnn
 
NY sucks in the summer without aircon - makes Durban look like paradise.
 
New York is one of the biggest cities. Can imagine that happening - but i know a mates dad was there and mentioned that they tend to have alot of power failures in the States in major cities.
 
This is bad news for NY but great news for us in CTN :)
Eskom not that bad after all?
