The hardest clashes Thursday took place at the outskirts of the village of Maroun Ras in the central sector of the border area, just north of Moshav Avivim. This is the second day of fighting in the same area where two IDF soldiers were killed Wednesday.

At about 5 P.M., a unit from the Golani Brigade ran into a large force of Hezbollah militants. It appears that the initial attack began with mortars launched against the IDF soldiers. The ambush took place in an area where a few homes are surrounded by agricultural fields. A number of explosions occurred, and the soldiers and dozens of Hezbollah militants exchanged heavy fire.

The IDF force required reinforcements to extricate itself from the area, and further heavy exchanges of fire followed, with mortars and Katyusha rockets landing on Avivim and its areas. The battle raged for hours, and the soldiers managed to hit dozens of Hezbollah fighters who launched anti-tank weapons, both of Soviet and European origin, and used heavy machine guns.

Hezbollah did not admit it suffered any casualties in the fighting. The IDF is still examining whether the initial blow by Hezbollah militants came from a Sagger anti-tank missile.

"The Golani Brigade is an active duty IDF unit with experience on the Lebanese and Gaza fronts. It is considered an elite IDF unit and has a storied combat history. They were forced to retreat from the battlefield under heavy fire from the Iranian trained Hezbollah fighters."

The Hezbollah fighters are well trained, and according to an anonymous senior military source, using ammunition and equipment such as armor piercing rounds, body armor, night vision gear and laser sights. Hezbollah also possesses mortars, RPGs, anti-tank and anti-personnel mines, anti-tank missiles and possibly surface to air missiles to accompany their arsenal of short and medium range missiles capable of striking into the heart of Israeli territory. Hezbollah is using infantry tactics and fighting at the squad and platoon level.

This isn't a garden variety militia, but a well trained fighting force, the Iranian version of the Foreign Legion.

This does not bode too well for Israel or those Neocons who think that Iran is going to be a walkover.

They have finally met their match, Hezbollah and Iran are going to walk all over them.

There is very little chance of that. In a full scale conflict you might find Israel will be less cautious about collateral damage. If you think that the force Israel have sent against Hezbollah is their full might you are in for a surprise.

My personal opinion is that the entire region would be better off as a smoking crater and I eagerly await the day when it is no longer of any consequence to the rest of the world.

No matter how good your ground forces are, if you do not have air superiority you are dead in the water. Sure the IDF was forced to retreat; because they where ambushed. I'm sure that section of ground where the ambush took place will have the crap bombed out of it over the next few hours.

Always remember the 6 day war.

i guess when you got the backing of USA(united states of @$$holes) then you are probably bound to win especially when it involves killing inoccent children and women, ruining the infrastructure of a country and then after doing every sickening act possible they will stand up and say we want ot help you build your country when in actual fact all they want is the oil!

The Americans also had air superiority in Vietnam and that did them a fat lot of good against the Viet Cong ... they had popular support and blended in with the civilian population and had extensive undergound tunnels and bunkers which is the very same tactics used by Hezbollah.

At some point you have to take on the enemy eyeball to eyeball.

These people are fanatical are now seemly well trained courtesy of the Iranians and fighting on their home ground ... a deadly combination as 23 dead Israeli soldiers so far testifies.

They ain't no Saddam Republican Guard.

USA went to Iraq because Saddam had weapons of mass destruction(well that was their reason) if America was so worried about the world and Saddam nuking everyone then why the US arent going to N.Korea bombing them? they openely claim to have weapons of mass destruction.

Its quite funny that the only after the Islamic countries which hold 70% of the worlds oil reserves.

You're right, they've been pumping that oil right out of Iraq and taking to staight to the US, thats why they are enjoying such low fuel prices at the moment...

There is lots of money to be made from wars - oil or not.

so people are allowed to die for you to pay 20cents a litre less for petrol?

People are allowed to suffer and live in inhumane conditions so that you pay 20 cents less a litre of petrol?

people lose their loved ones, mothers out their children in graves, young children grow up with no parents so that you pay 20 cents less for a litre of Petrol?

Let me ask you.. what if those people where you and the ones you love? would you still be of the same selfish inhumane disgusting opinion????

Well clearly you don't get sarcasm so I spell it out for you:

Petrol price is at an all time high. Here, the US and everywhere else.

Now thats out of the way let me address the rest of your post: Last time I checked I wasn't the president of the US and not in charge of their armies or military decisions. When an army under my control attacks some country for oil or whatever reasons you can get on your high-horse and scold me.

Until such time I suggest you read and think before you open your mouth.

dont use quicktime.

anyway America has Nukes also?
so how come it is not good for any other country to have nukes but ok for them to have nukes.

oh i forgot...In case USA wants to nuke another country then it is perfectly legitimate to do so.

U.S. Armed Forces were geared up to fight a conventional war against the Soviet Union and thus was not prepared to fight an unconventional war.

Also the Vietnam campaign was micro-managed from the White House.

Just wondering how the IDF is going to apply conventional tactics to solve an unconventional problem ?

It's good and all using tanks / the PBI / aircraft etc. to wipe out the infra-struture - but the problem will not have been solved .
