Local call-centre industry hopes to benefit from anti-Indian backlash by British cons

could benefit SA with its blander accent

Perhaps if you only count a small percentage of the population.

I know it is good to get business, but I don't see us doing any better with racist Brits.

all customer calls will be answered by fellow Brits with no foreigners

That way you can get bad customer service from rude Brits instead.

Telkom should get into this market sell its spare capacity :) We all know how friendly their staff is.

Out-sourcing - Anyone see the Simpson's last night?

If an overseas company had to oursource their call centers to Telkom they would go out of business in a few short weeks as customers left them in droves.

We, unfortunately, have no where else to go.

I feel this isnt such a clever idea either...the blokes signing the paperwork for this are going to regret it..

1) when I came to the uk, I had 0% chance of understanding a person with a heavy accent, and they had 0% chance of understanding me. plain and simple
1a) it isnt just the accent, it is colloquialisms too...this creates a language barrier, even though both parties speak english. Brits like getting the feeling that they are being cared for, and when a company has a foreign call centre, they dont get that warm fuzzy feeling that the person on the other end of the phone cares.
2) the article doesnt mention racist brits, ok?

Apart from being irritated by accents or being blatantly xenophobic, consumers are worried about the privacy of their personal information.
xenophobic is pretty close.

EDIT - I phoned Barclays the other day via skype and got a south african - accent was a dead give away.

NO it isn't - unless your English is poor.
"The term is typically used to describe fear or dislike of foreigners or in general of people different from one's self." Close enough to justify the confusion.
Did it make you feel warm & fuzzy speaking to a fellow South African? :p
Why would it - I'm not South African - probably why I was able to pick up on the accent so easily. ;)
