so since yesterday my router every 2-5 mins just loses connection as if it were unplugged. so im just wondering if this is because my router is getting old and packing up or a different reason.

The router im using is a Billion 400g if that helps at all. and all the cables are fine. also theres no outage in my area so i can't see why

In my experience, this is usually an overheating issue. When the router disconnects, feel if it is unusually warm to the touch.

i thought it was that too so i left my router off the whole night but soon as i turn it on this morning it keeps disconnecting again.

Hi There,
Could you maybe share your connection settings so we can see the attenuation and noise ratios?
While you may believe there is no outage it could be a connection issue.

Tim

i have no clue what Attenuation and noise ratio's are so tell me where i can see the info and ill post it.

My mom's got the same issues with the same router (wireless disconnects, speed issues, etc). I've had her line tested and the results were good, so it's not the line.
Eventually gave up trying to sort it out and have just bought a different router for her (D-link 2640U) it works perfectly for what she needs it for - apparently the Billion 400G's are not that great; I think these are/were the freebies Telkom gave it's contract customers...

Hi Megamuffin,
You would need to go into the router page using a browser.
enter 10.0.0.2 in the url bar and press enter.
The user name and password should be admin
Then find a tab that will give you statistics.

Regards

Tim

Hi Megamuffin,
Thanks for the stats. The line is not the problem. Start by going with wobblewiz's suggestion of upgrading the firmware. If that doesn't wotk then you will have to let some Rands out of the purse and purchase a new one.
I use a Netgear at home and it has been absolutely brilliant for the last 2 years. I paid R900 for it back then.

Ive already done the firmware update it keeps losing connection actually losing connection as im typing this so i have to restart my router then it connects again. oh well its been a good run this router lasted me about 3 years.

is there any specific routers i should stay away from or would any router between 600-R1000 be ok?

Monitor your SNR check if it changes alot you may have a faulty pots filter or wiring

Hey Megamuffin,
Do what player108gp suggests. If you need to buy a new router (if you haven't already), I have always been served well by D-Link. But to be honest, I have only had one router and that has now held up for 4 years. On the budget side, friends of mine have had goods experiences with tp-link. Whatever you choose, please let us know what your experience with the product is.

I think you need to reset your Connection setup as to make it work accurately and properly. If still having the problem then you need to check out your router wires and other ports, which might have some problem. Otherwise need to contact your connection provider, who can better diagnose your problem.
