Can i VPN though an unsupported adsl modem

Hi everyone,

My mom lives in another country and i would like to be able to VPN to her connection.
unfortunately her ADSL modem is very old and does not support VPN.

I advised her to replace it, and gave her a model number and a shop to go to, but i made a terrible
mistake and got very very confused and she bought a router and not a modem.

If i look at the specs i see the router does support VPN passthrough.

will I still be able to connect the router to the existing adsl, and use the VPN passthrough feature?

the more i think about it , the less it seems possible, but thought i will double check.

Depending on the protocol being used, if the modem has port forwarding capabilities then it can be done. For example a Windows VPN can be setup to use PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) - the relevant PPTP ports (don't have them in front of me at the moment) can then be forwarded to that machine and it should work.
 
The device you bought has absolutely nothing to do with Adsl. It is used to create a wireless network around the house. Adsl is the exact opposite data medium to wireless :D However, are you sure your old Adsl modem does not have pass-thru port forwarding? Just about all do have. If not, sell your useless Wifi router on ebay and shop online for a cheap Adsl modem. You also get a Adsl modem/Wifi router combo. But they are a bit more expensive. I have a old one gathering dust if you are interested.

I'd look at seeing if the existing ADSL router can be put into passthrough mode. If it can, then configure the new router with the PPPoE credentials from the ADSL router, and let the ADSL router be a dumb "modem" instead. Then you can do whatever you need to with the new router. If the existing router does not do passthrough, either return the new router and get a proper ADSL router/wifi access point, or consider getting something like a DLink 2500U which you can put in passthrough mode.
 
+1 Make the current ADSL modem a bridge device and use the WAN port on the new device to do the pppoe internet connection, then you can achieve what you are wanting.

I am with warwick on this one. Your poor mom doesn't want to go off to the shop she cant understand and say that she got the wrong part. so bridge the ADSL modem and connect the new device.
