Anyone know when the Jas Jam will be available, I will sell my kidney and cut off my own left nut for this.

Me, I'd hold onto that left nut. iMate are famed for supplying devices with all the specs, except 2 things. 64 MB RAM to run all that stuff. I think not, and on a grandfather clock of 400MHz. Yeah, they all will work, but you have to make sure it is the only thing running. Skype will use up a fair bit of the RAM, and never mind what the Windows will do to it.

Until iMate decide to buff those 2 specs, I wouldn't bother. They've got the tech available, and the price at which they sell their stuff, I'd rather boycott and stick with Nokia than settle for a slow PDA with cellphone features.

just my R0.02

You are so right graviti - they messed up big time after the XDA/HIMALAYA which had 128Megs... then they downscaled and increased the OS/Apps and RAM requirement... stoopid.

I take it your recommendation is to stick to something like Nokia 9300i ?

So you recon the i-Mate is a bit light in the pants. Is it the same for the Jas Jar ?

Yep - that's just the problem - RAM. It holds the OS and data fine, but when it comes to multitasking, esp. running skype, it falls over horribly and needs regular resets.!
I can't say I would look at the Nokia tho, symbian sucks. There are so many more windows apps for these machines out there. IMO HP had a nice one with GPS built in - at a reasonable price too...

Nobody seems to have a clear answer on arrival date.
Since HTC is also branding their devices now, some speculate that they will sell their devices (including the HTC Tytn / iMate JasJam) in SA.

I'm not holding my breath for a release date from iMate.
They just suck. They normally launch months after all the other distributers.
Their support is even worse. Sea-Rea-Haas!
(Now I'm just straying from the topic)

So what is so wonderfull about the device.
The net is now littered with reviews. It's a massive upgrade compared to the sluggish HTC Wizard / iMate KJam. Why they stuck a 200mHz processor in the KJam still baffles me.
At least this new baby comes close the processing power of the JasJar (520mHz). It should be a blast.

Oh. Price. Right. No clue. I started a tread somewhere else on myadsl where a guy speculated that the launch price would be +/- R8200.
I would not mind spending this amount when the day comes.
I can't wait. :D

Enjoy your "FREAKY FRIDAY".

Well I think it is tossup between the I-Mate Jas Jam and the HP HW 6915 for now.

Have not seen the Jas Jam in person yet, but the HP has GPS which I want.

Sure one could mate the i-Mate to Blue tooth GPS as well.......

Ho, Hi, Ho. It's off the Vodaworld we go ..........

It looks like most guys fixed the problem by speeding up the processor with an overclocking app. Even Skype worked like a charm after that.
Just the battery life suffred. That's the only reason why I don't use it.
The juice got halfed.

I'm not sure about the memory though. Theres a couple of nice WinMob devices with the same specs but running 2003se.

I think both devices are made by HTC.
HTC is the OEM of HP's PDA's but not all their phones.

Now that is interesting.

Have decided I am gonna wait untill the end of my contract in October, that way if I don't get the phone I want I can have my number ported to a new network and get the best deal.

Still want the Jas Jam, just hope it's not a piece of junk ....... up to now I have only had Nokia's and they have all been solid. they just don't have anything that I can see myself carrying around for 2-years.

It might be a good idea to try and get your hands on one for a while, to ensure you're comfortable with the PDA as a phone setup. It has it's limitations.

The K-Jam / JasJar and JasJam are all true converged devices, meaning they can perform many functions within one device.

The problem is, as with most converged devices, they're not particularly good at any of them, a decent (but not stellar phone) with decent (but not stellar) PDA capabilities.

The two functions are also in opposition, the better the battery life for the phone, the slower the CPU speed. This is why the K-Jam only runs at 200MHz, to give a decent battery life, but nowhere as good as a standard Nokia.

The JasJar runs at 520MHz, but chows through a battery in a morning if you also use it as a phone, which most people don't. It's main application seems to be a 3G-enabled PDA. Brilliant at this. If I were on the road at the moment, I would've been typing this on my JasJar.

The JasJam seems to sit somewhere in between, a 400MHz cpu with (hopefully) better battery technology and HSDPA.

As a die-hard fan of Nokia phones (and a drawer ful of them), which model do I use for every day use: The K-Jam!

I need the converged PDA capability and it's got one of the best form factors around. I actually type faster on the K-Jam than on the JasJar.
But make no mistake; not a day goes past that I don't feel like throwing the K-Jam against a wall, it's just too slow sometimes....

Can't wait for the JasJam!

Same here, can't wait for the JasJam. My Jasjar is fine but the battery is starting to give troubles and I only had it for 8 months now. Usually a battery last about 18 months for me before it starts giving problems.

Well V3G seems you and Banana Split are going to duke it out for the first Jas Jam ........ I'll take unit no. 3.

The timing is either brilliant or crappy when it comes to phone upgrades, I think this time I might have the edge. I am on month 22 tomorrow, but I might as well wait for the Jas Jam.

If it is still not available in October then I have the MNP card to play as well.

The HP 6915 is also looking good on my books and it has GPS as well.

Will wait for some real world reviews of the Jas Jam.

Either HTC has not yet made up their mind or the units were pre-production will ill defined specs, or even the dumb ass that wrote the review.

Some sites offer great service and content while others merely copy content and are happy to be traffic / click / Google whores.

Have you received one for testing at Vodacom as yet ?

Well looking on HTC's site, and the spec sheet i get this. [HTC Tytn = Imate Jasjam i believe]

http://europe.htc.com/products/htctytn.html

Key Features
+ Microsoft® Windows Mobile® 5.0
+ Direct Push Email
+ WCDMA, HSPDA enabled, EDGE, GPRS
+ 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM
+ Large 2.8 inch Touch Screen LCD display
+ Jog Wheel for easy one-hand operation
+ 2 megapixel camera
+ Micro SD
+ Mini USB

It only appears in the spec sheet, the site only talks about UMTS , which i believe technically covers HSDPA ?

Yes, '3G', HSDPA and HSUPA is all part of the UMTS spec.

Why would they say HSDPA-Enabled, and not just HSDPA?

As if it can be HSDPA but is not. They're not saying 'EDGE-Enabled', for example.

Might be that they'll launch with 384 and later do a software upgrade to HSDPA?

Even with 'just' 3G, I'll take it!

Yea i wondered about that bit too, sounded a bit suspicious. My initial thought was that it might related to the lack of availability [or end-user knowledge] of HSDPA in the world. I always get the impression [especially when talking to USA people] that they are far behind ZA regarding the rollout of this sort of tech [or rather user take-up and awareness of it].

Just looking at the American version of the HTC site , i got the impression they might only be just starting to get into the 3G mode [nevermind HSDPA].

PS: The american version is quite an annoying site, you can't browse the product line per phone at all! You need to browse per carrier [Cingular/Verizon etc] and then from there get to THEIR version of the phone...

My 2c...

I read yesterday that HP may be dropping their line of PDAs, so be wary of going that way.

Me? I'm happy with my K-JAM (overclocked to 240) - battery lasts as much as 3 days if I'm not using Skype or MSN... and oh so configurable. I love the form factor, the full keyboard... and bear in mind that the OMAP 200MHz runs the same speed as previous TI chips ran at 400MHz.

That sounds like HP, if they can't win they willdrop it like a hot patat.

So the K-Jam form factor with some new bits shoehorned under the bonnet should be good for the Jas-Jam ........ when it appears.

Are there any other similar devices on your radar at present ?

Well HTC Sales on the other hand, are skyrocketing. So i'd say it's a safe bet going for an HTC related device [even if it's rebranded ].

It sells for R7,000 in Saudi. Know a few people who have one. The damn thing is too bulky, and as usual, they do not use all the features, so its pretty much a waste of money. The only thing I see handy is the WiFi and 3g, but I am waiting for a phone with WiFi and Google Talk loaded. That will be the start of the end of Cel phones.
