Hi, I have the Netgear DG834GT ADSL Wireless Router. My clients and friends are telling me that on MSN and Skype I keep signing out and back in very often during the day.

I've spoken to a few IT people and all they could thing of is that the "Automatically reconnect" is no selected in the Netgear options. I've checked that setting and it is active.

I've upgraded my firmware as a suggestion, yet this problem still exists.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks
Ari

I'm with Mweb and they said everything is fine their side. Could you take some screen shots of your Netgear setup so I could compare them my side?

Tnx

A bit off, but may I ask why you are with MWeb?

I've noticed the same thing happening on my set up, only thing there isn't a Netgear involved. The other pc on my lan is also logged into skype with another username and it goes offline 4-5 times an hour. Very strange seeings that there is no one sitting in front of that machine!!

I also have that modem and have not had any problems with it .... it is possible that mweb are the ones initiating the reconnects ... maybe try another ISP. ISPs used to disconnect and reconnect you in order to determine your usage ... not sure if they still do.

Reason i'm with Mweb is I used to be with Icon in the good old dialup days and can not change our main email address.

I do have the Mweb ADSL monitor loaded on my pc, but the problem was there before I installed it, if that helps at all?

Yep, I also have the DG834GT, and haven't had any problems, however, I have heard of a few people having disconnect problems on them. Which firmware version are you using?

Also, log into your router, and at the bottom of the start page, click "Show Statistics". Copy paste the bottom table about the adsl link. This will give us more info on your line.

Cheers, Nick

I have the 834G and don't have this problem. One suggestion is to turn on UPnP (UPnP menu) if it is not already on - this helps with P2P apps. I was in an office with a similar router (the version without wireless) where this happened frequently during the day. I still to this day can't say what causes it, cos the internet doesn't go down when it happens. I suspect it has to do with the P2P protocol... UPnP being turned on should help. You can also specify the incoming port for Skype and enable incoming traffic on this port to route to your IP address in the router if UPnP doesn't help. Let me know if you have trouble doing this.

Also, try disabling your firewall for a couple of hours to see what happens.

Also... maybe it's their systems and not yours (Less likely)?
Cheers

I bought the same router 2 weeks ago and immediately upgraded to the latest firmware version (1.02.04).

I have no problems with disconnects on Skype or MSN.

Hmmm... those look look fine. I reckon you should just get it swapped out.

That would have been me. Agree 100% with mas. I struggled for a while even after numerous firmware upgrades etc. So eventually swapped that damn thing out and got another. Problems dissapeared.:) Seems there must have been a bad batch.
