View Full Version : BMW 320i vs Audi A4 2.0TFSi vs Lexus IS250

I am looking for a sedan and have narrowed my choice to the above 3 models.

My requirements are:
1. Not to spend over R300000.
2. I need Xenon headlights, automatic/steptronic gearshift and a leather interior.
3. Unfortunately, image plays a small part of my choice. My clients need to see me in a decent car.
4. Expecting a baby in November, so boot space is an issue.

Comments:
1. I like the built quality of the BMW and I am partial to it, but every Tom, **** & Harry, their wives, their mistresses and their mistress's personal trainer drives one. I like the 320i with a sports package and the extras I mentioned above.
2. Interior of Audi is great, but extras cost a whopping fortune - you don't even get a cupholder as standard. Also, the car is "mid-cycle" being an "upgrade" from the previous model.
3. I test drove the Lexus - stunning - the standard paddles for gearshifting almost sold me, but although the interior is upmarket, it still reminds me of a Toyota - the Prius for that matter...

Any suggestions?

Actually it is R598k without options and you will likely pay around R650k.

I drove an Audi A4 2.0T DTM Edition which is basically an A4 2.0T with a body kit and better suspension. What a car, simply amazing.

The Lexus will also be great but if you want the proper version it will cost you around R357k iirc.

BMW... check my sig.

If you want something a little sporty get the A4 2.0T DTM, it costs R298k and comes with the Audi S4's Recaro seats in leather and alcantara. Not 100% sure what is standard on the car. It is only available in Manual tho but it is simply amazing how well the controls work.

The other thing is there wont be many around.

It is hard to choose between the DTM and the Lexus.

so is the Audi A4! Everybody drives one, even worse than BMW! I guess if you want a car that not everybody drives, you better consider buying a second hand one level up, like BMW 5xx or Audi A6, or Merc E class. You can get one under maintenance plan for about R300K I think.

Eish at least give the guy an objective and unbiased opinion :p

Go for the IS250, simply for the reason that it's not as common as the other 2. It'll stand out more in a parking lot and your clients will be more impressed with something stylish but different.

Would only take the Lexus if it was the IS350. I personally think it is the best option if you dont want something sporty. Great looker lots of standard features and having had a LS400 in the past I can vouch for the quality. It will also be far less common than either the BMW or the Audi.

I do see a BMW 320 as extremely common.

IF you are not after performance then get the lexus, if you are then wait for the IS350 and get that or get the A4 2.0T now.

As far as I know, the DTM also has a different mapping system taking it to about 162kw from the standard 147kw.

I'd go for either the Audi or Lexus.

Lexus is the clear choice. Either way you gonna end up paying more than 300k, if you take the base models of the BMW and Audi and then add the extras.

Try and see if you can the SE version of the Lexus. Very much worth it. I'm getting mine next week.

I was in the same dillema as you and went for a bmw. Yes everyone drives them - so what. It is a great car that still retain its allure. I love the Audi boot but the car does not do much for me. It it too clinical.

I drive a BMW. Trust me those paddleshift/tiptronic/other gizmos are not worth it. I stick it in normal auto all teh time.

Get a demo bmw that is loaded with options instead of a standard sports pack.

The xenon headlights are awesome - also if you are getting a sports version - you must get one with a sunroof. it completes the look.

I say stay with German tech, toyota (lexus) is just missing class and that feeling of safety. If you like to feel the road then the BMW, if you like a more cumfortable drive then the Audi

You havent mentioned it here but you should have a look at the Jetta / Passat cars too, they are fancy cars, the interior is top notch and youll be amazed at how much boot space there is, basically the better priced cousin to the audi, The petrol and Diesel prices are close for the 2 litre variants, and both drive extremely well.

Just something to consider?

Edit: nevermind just noticed post date.

Perhaps he needs to upgrade then
I hear the Audi RS6 is a HUGE stationwagon :)
plus the sunroof has a solar panel built into it that keeps the aircon running while the car is parked, I would buy it just for that.
Seriously I would.

BMW is crap these days so won't even consider.

The Lexus comes equipped with everything but the kitchen sink, BUT weighs a lot, so performance is okay-ish.

Also, the ride is a bit soft for my liking, whereas the Audi's is a bit more stiff so you have more confidence taking that corner faster.

Audi for me.

03-12-2009, 11:07 AM
Lexus hands down, you cant compare it to the other 2 models IMO. It will be the most expensive but its totally worth it. I know what you mean by its still a toyota but then again sit in that then sit in the other 2, Lexus interior is far better.

I'd rate Audi over BMW in terms of image/prestige - especially a 320i.

Not at all ;)

I'm not sure if the C30 was around then either (I meant the S40 in my post) - and I'd never ever have bought a Volvo had there not been a hatch version.

I've always admired the T5 engine and value though
