Telkom pushes ADSL ‘continuous connectivity’ advertising despite ASA ruling

Continuous connectivity my backside..... Lemme see, since last night 8pm i have been disconnected 37 times and counting, due to telkoms inablity to fix anything. These errors are port errors, i have gone through 3 different modems that all work perfectly fine and 3 routers again which work perfectly fine at other locations as to rule that out as a possiblity. Im kinda sick of telkom now and their useless service....

When will South Africa learn. In the current enviroment, without changed in the law of the country, Telkom is king and controls anything and everything.

ASA, ICASA all there to make us look like a functional country. If Telkom really wanted to cut the entire country of ADSL tommorow, they can, they get sued, in 5 years time maybe they will pay some kinda damges, but they will just claim best effort service, and there was a explosion at their main exchage or something.

The ASA should make the media culpable.

According to the Advertising Authority refusal to abide by the ASA’s rulings can result in various sanctions, including a media campaign informing consumers about the misinformation which must be paid for by the advertiser, in this case Telkom.

Would be so awesome if it would come to that media campaign :D

Subject: Telkom and the ASA

Dear Sir/Madam

I assume I have the correct email address for your shareholder relations manager - if not kindly would the recipient forward this to the correct address.

I am considering investing in your company by purchasing a block of shares. I have, however, been alarmed by reports of Telkom not abiding by South African regulators, the most recent example being the ASA, as described on this web page:

http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=3742

As I make it a principle never to invest in dishonest companies, I would be pleased to hear if there is any truth in these accusations, and, if so, knowing from you if it is corporate policy to flout "unsuitable" regulations?

Thank you for your time.

Jabulani

Ask Telkom to run a line quality test on the cable from the streetbox to your house. Then another test from the streetbox to the local Telkom exchange. Chances are the cable isn't suitable for proper ADSL service without introducing 'noise' on the line which could cause the interruptions / disconnections you're experiencing if they're bad enough. Then again, it could be as simple as solinoids(sp?) on the cable becoming de-earth and introducing line problems or attenuation. Either way, it's indicative of Telkom not making use of the high 'maintenance' fees they charge consumers to upgrade their existing infrastrure - despite their claims to the contrary.

Telkom leading from the front, the proudly South African way ;)

is it not splitting hairs when you say its not "continuous" if it only resets once a day or so? (resett takes less than one minute?)

I don't recall saying anything about "worrying" them - nothing "worries" Telkom, so I don't know where you got that from. I would just be interested how they reply, if at all, which seems most likely.

Is it splitting hairs when your ADSL connection is unusable during 'Standard' / Business hours due to extra voltage on the line caused by business communications? The net effect is that without maintaining and upgrading their infrastructure, Telkom is in fact providing a service which is only usable afterhours and that by any definition or perception of the word is not continuous. Not to mention the ticking 'noise' every second which started several weeks ago that Telkom does not want to fix. That noise causes latency / lost packets / lag in my online games - which interrupts my communications to the international server - so again, I say it's not continuous. In truth, the daily reset doesn't concern me - except when it happens on Sunday afternoon while I'm busy battling my online enemies and I get disconnected from the server as a result of a broken connection to the server  The rest of the time, the daily reset doesn't affect me as I'm either sleeping or at work.

okay but you seem to agree there is something wrong with your specific adsl line which is causing the problems, (the noise and the voltage etc...) so maby you should get that sorted out? i mean a cellphone can make phone calls, but if its broken it cant make phone calls, does that mean vodacom shouldnt advertise that it can make phone calls simply cause some people's phones isnt working right? i agree telkom should fix your line but they dont need to advertise differently. they may add something like "our service is crap" in the fine print or something, but i reckon most people's adsl is actually working "continuously" for all practical meanings of the word

No, because the reset will kill a long download.

I would love to get it sorted out but all my attempts to report the problem have been closed without my knowledge. If I do get a response, Telkom threatens me with : "The quality of the line isn't suitable for ADSL" which amazes me becuase I'm using ADSL - I used to get up to 470kbps on my 512kbps line 2 months ago. Then something happened and the noise started. Since then my average line speed is around 420kbps with the constant 'noise' on the line. Telkom has run tests (all during the day, sadly - which as I've advised before is when the line is incapable of sustaining ADSL connections).

Once, when I took a day's leave, I had 4 disconnects in 2 hours during Standard time and that's what initiated my original fault report. After hours I had no problems until the noise started. Telkom knows this as I've informed them repeated - yet nothing gets done. If anyone has a contact in Telkom planning and can advise when upgrades will take place ... I'd appreciate a contact number. On my own, I'm getting nowhere - but that doesn't stop Telkom from charging for a full service and not doing anything to bring their "best effort" to an acceptable level.

The bottomline, regardless of the cause, I'm still paying for a Telkom ADSL service which does not live up to their "bestbroadband" claims. As for everyone else's ADSL connections - I truly hope they don't suffer the same problems. If you look above, you'll see that at least Methias is also having problems. However, everyone suffers from the 24 hour reset and that is still and interruption in the connectivity. No reset at all and Telkom can sing from the mountains all they want that they offer a "continuous" service. That's not the case at present though.

EDIT: Almost forgot to mention that the cable I'm referring to is the main cable from the Telkom exchange to my neighbourhood streetbox. Unfortunately we've all become complacent regarding the poor cellphone signal and noisy Telkom lines which we've had for years. No amount of fault reports or requests for upgrades have materialised into anything substantial - but we still need telecoms services for communication, alarm systems, even home / small businesses so we have no choice but to pay. Maybe one day we'll get a service provider that cares about's it's consumers.

No, because the reset will kill a long download.
Besides that it also prohibits any advantages of having a static IP since a new IP would be allocated upon the reset, therefore making things like hosting impossible on ADSL.

No it is not splitting hairs, it is Telkom misleading.
Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary Of Current English: "continuous - going on without a break".

hosting is very possible with DynDNS. also if you put up a big enough fight you can get a static IP from your isp at no extra charge.

i had the same thing. my line was 100% then one day it became VERY slow. after about 2 weeks i took on the mission of asking telkom for help. i reported here also that time that i was amased by Telkom that day that even though my line was actually working, just slow, they fixed it the same day and kept me up to date throughout the day and that same evening i was able to download at full speed again. however as i've mentioned before also, i did get a few stitches in my forehead when i fell off my chair that day, but its been working since then :)
