Why SA can’t just give up on SABC, especially now

I see nothing there that couldnt be accomplished by any private broadcaster. I also see no mention of the obvious impact pressure exerted by government has. The Mbeki bio comes to mind.
A state broadcaster is a propaganda tool and should have been acknowledged as being so.

Bwana, I disagree, there are other pressures operating on a private broadcaster that will affect its coverage.
I don't think etv does a much better job of news than the SABC.

Let the SABC exist, but stop giving them public funding...
Make it so that they actually have to compete. Then they wouldn't be so crap.

You may prefer a private broadcaster, but the reality is that only a public broadcaster could ever have the reach the SABC does, and only a government-sponsored broadcaster would transmit in all the languages that the SABC does.
The SABC is far from perfect, and you may even think that other broadcasters are more entertaining|less biased, but in truth, we do need a public broadcaster.

Also, I really don't see anybody doing a significantly better job of news on television. etv? Sure if you want to see bloodied remains after a car crash.

Moot action if you're paying for the crap against your will.
The problem that affects both etv and SABC is the power of the government. Etv has to watch their step continiously and keep 'sucking up' to the government just to remain in business. Broadcasting licenses cost more than just money...
