Steven Hayward, Telkom's managing executive for retail marketing, says: “If one considers inflationary pressures, in real terms there is a price drop of 5.6%. This indicates Telkom's ongoing commitment to providing affordable access to telephony for all our customers.”

This man, Steve Hayward, should under no circumstances whatsoever ever be allowed to give the public maths figures. He manages to **** it up every time he tries.

Public note to Steve Hayward: You know little word you keep seeing when formulating Telkom's new tariffs, "CPI", yes, I know you keep seeing it everywhere. I think the time has finally come let you know exactly what CPI is. It's "inflation". Now stop making a public fool yourself!

How many was that again?
2 Million out of 2.5 Million Telkom lines were cut off due to unaffordability and/or fraud...
Despite Telkom's Licensing Obligations to provide Telephones for the poorest of the poor, they chose profit before poor, like true Capitalists and cut the poor souls off.

Now those same souls must either..
a) find a working public phone or
b) purchase a cell phone and pay prepaid rates

No phone > Phone> No Phone
The poor are back where they started and our Minister did and said nothing.
 
What a pathetic article. Always remembering we come from a world where telkom consistently raised prices year by year (and doing their fair bit to raise the inflation rate - while firing the techies - how dumb is that?) Then due to market pressure they "reduce" prices - while at the same time raising line rental fees (making phones more unaffordable for poorer people) - how can increased line rental ever equate to lowering prices? Telkom is one seriously brain dead company - they squeeze a very small percentage dry - instead of lowering costs (installation, line rental!!) and making services available to everybody. (And just btw - where's the 384 upgrade to 512? - or will we give them that carrot next year??!!)

(oh - but even better - we'll make the people use mobile services!!!)
