Disconnect when 3G/GPRS handover occurs

I think I have come closer to getting to the bottom of the disconnects I have been experiencing over the last couple of days:
My 6680 disconnects as soon as my phone switches from GPRS to 3G or vice versa.

Today when I tested at work, everything was fine, full speed, but that's because my 3G signal at work is very good - no handover.
[At home, the 3G signal is ok, but it frequently switches between 3G/GPRS unless I lock the phone to 3G.]

I have repeated this test 5 times. I only had a ping going, and it timed out as soon as the phone switched. Then a few seconds later the connection is dropped.

Anybody else experiencing this?

I will double check tomorrow morning at work with my cable connection, just to rule out any possible issues with Bluetooth.

:confused: is this not what was discussed waaay back in the Nokia 6680 thread, the solution being to either upgrade the 6680's firmware or install NetMonitor [on the 6680] and use NetMonitor to prevent switching between GPRS & 3G?

That was more to stop the 6680 switching to 2G when you still had a good 3G signal.

This problem is one of dropping the data connection when switching. This, obviously, should not happen.
 
Just checked with my 6680 cable connection as well. In 3 out of 4 handovers the connection dropped, one of them came alive again after a few seconds. This seems to be consistent with the DNS problems I thought I had.

Only problem is that NetMonitor is no longer available anywhere ...... I looked, but maybe I need glasses or Google classes.
 
This happens to me all the time and it has gotten so annoying that I have given up and switched off my 3G.......

I know this isnt a problem with firmware because this always happened on my 6680 and my N90 and this is not a problem on MTN's network as I have tested it with both of my phones.

I find it hard to believe that Vodacom cannot sort out such a problem when even MTN can get it right!

One of the techies came out to Stellenbosch to test today. Hope he can sort something out as I still have the problem. My colleague's 6680 (in Stellenbosch) does the same thing.
 
Well this has always happened with my Sony Ericsson V600i... when ever it switches from 3G back to GPRS it disconnects... it is a pain and a half. switching from GPRS to 3G seems to work fine, it's just switching back where it has the problem.
 
Just checked now with a friend's N70. His connection "freezes" for about 5 seconds and then comes alive again when the phone switches either from or to 3G. This was in the northern parts of Stellenbosch so a different set of towers from mine.

Finding spots around the desk or wherever you are where the phone "prefers" 3G and other spots where it "prefers" GPRS. Then once the phone is connected on ,say 3G, move it to the GPRS "spot" where it will switch over.

I can also do it by holding my hand over the phone, but this is more trickey as one doesn't want to kill the signal completely, and my hand obviously reduces both the 3G and GPRS signals, although I think the 3G signal signal is reduced quicker cause it is higher in frequency.

It is more difficult to do this test where the 3G signal is strong, like where I work is very close to the Golf Course tower.

The phone is also more reluctant to switch from 3G to GPRS when there's traffic flowing, but it seems to always switch to 3G irrespective of traffic flow if the 3G signal is strong enough.

It was the top of your desk that I was enquiring about - tops of desks made from metal have been known to cause interference problems with wireless comms etc, but since you have a wooden top to your desk it's even more strange that there are specific GPRS and separate 3G hotspots along the wooden top of your desk...:)
 
I still get disconnected when my phone (6680, firmware version 4.04.07) switches from 3G to GPRS. I don't get disconnected when it switches from GPRS to 3G.

V3g, one of the radio guys came to investigate around the time I made the original complaint, but I haven't heard from him since. I assume he did not find any problems as he probably tested with a different device?

I am sure you have spotted other forumites who have complained about this in different threads over the last couple of months. Perhaps the radio guys should also test with a 6680 with same firmware version?
 
Several months later - and I've also now started getting this problem. I live in the northern suburbs of JHB, but I've noticed it elsewhere too. Whenever my connection changes from 3G to GPRS or vice versa, 5 seconds later the connection gets closed!! MXit, Opera Mini or whatever else I'm using then has to reconnect; sometimes the application crashes too (Opera Mini).

I thought it was my phone - so I tried on my brother's and GF's, and it happens to them as well! My N70 also doesn't support 3G-Only mode (only Dual Mode), and I like the speed of 3G so I'm kinda stuck!

Please help us out!
 
Has a solution been found for this problem ? I've started experiencing the same problem - the moment a handover occurs the connection is disconnected. Using a Samsung U700 as modem. One gets really fedup if this happens about every 10 minutes.

Please help !
