Does anyone know if you are able to force virgin data onto the vodacom network? I see i am able to manual set my virgin sim onto the vodacom network but i dont deem to be able to get data connected. anyone else know any tricks? and would i be able to do it with the Sony Ericsson data card supplied by Virgin mobile?

Not sure exactly what you mean by 'forcing Virgin data onto the Vodacom network'. I doubt your Virgin SIM would allow you access to the Voda network, even though Virgin is riding on the back of CellC's infrastructure -- which is itself in many cases riding on the back of Vodacom!

I am using a generic GPRS data card for which I had to configure the settings manually. I will paste them below. In my area this comes up in the Voda Dashboard 7 software I am using as 'Vodacom (roaming)' rather than Virgin, but still runs through the Virgin network (not Vodacom) and at those wonderful Virgin rates (50c/MB).

--------------
USING THE GPRS AND 3G CARDS WITH A VIRGIN SIMCARD:
Separate profile needs to be set in the Dashboard software for separate Virgin GPRS and 3G card installation (though Virgin currently does not offer 3G, only GPRS and EDGE).
If settings do not pick up automatically the following are valid for Virgin (re-edit the Virgin Dashboard profile to enter manual DNS etc.):
APN: vdata
Login ID: blank
Login Password: blank
DNS: 196.31.116.241 and 196.31.116.242
(Generic public addresses which will work are 196.7.0.138 and 196.7.142.132 but may be slower than the correct ones)
Modem setting: officially should be *99#, but also appears to work using Voda setting (as does MTN: *99***1#)
Initialization string should be changed to at+cgdcont=1,"ip","vdata","",0,0,
(but also appears to work using Voda setting (AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet")
SMTP server for outgoing mail (change in e-mail client): mail.cmobile.co.za
Current flat data rate 50c/MB

What I did was do the manual network selection in order to roam on the vodacom network and then still used the virgin "vdata" apn to connect.
