Violence erupted at the University of Pretoria's Mamelodi campus on Friday, university authorities said.

The students went on a rampage burning tyres and a car, and breaking into houses near the campus gates.

Students are protesting following a decision by the university that the campus would be turned into a community centre to cater for the needs of the Mamelodi community.WTF

"Rubber tyres were burnt in the morning, when a handful of students gathered outside the campus gates to continue with their strike," said campus director Edwin Smith.

A press conference organised by the Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania (Pasma) was itself disrupted as students went on a rampage.

"On Sunday, we will hold a public meeting with the community, the SA Communist Party, the ANC Youth League and the school governing body and on Monday we will intensify our action," said Pasma national spokesman Mametlwe Sebei.

School children around the area were involved in the violence. Houses were broken into and one student was taken to hospital, said Sebei.

"Police arrived and warned the students that they will be shot at if they did not stop their violence," Sebei said.

The principal, Calie Pistorius, had to be escorted out of campus by police on Thursday when he tried to address the students.

The campus would be closed until the violence ended, said Smith. - Sapa

On some level I have some sympathy - I think of uct occupied by a squatter camp - but then - it's the people! - but what kind of decision making causes this anyway?

Where do they get it from? The internet?

I really don't want to live in a racist country [sic] where the police think they can open fire on any provocation. Scumbags. We still live in a police state. The really bad parts of a corrupt police state. Rapidly going in that direction - and all I have to see is policeman firing on protesters in CT for instance - wtf is that? Violence generally is out of control in this country. And I've got to say - the minister has got no clue - when senior policeman can run amuck - torture suspects - and generally act like the force they inherited except worse.

Arrogance is overwhelming - quick to demand an apology - quick to condemn - quick to protest - but blind to the world.

Nice..
and nice tibby too.

These kids are so full of **** it is unbelievable.

Breaking into houses? That is just ridiculous, and assault school kids? That has nothing with what they are trying to do.
Now people will be racist about this, because its the "black" campus. But these kids bring the racism on themselves when they do things like this.

they arent doing themselves any favours, but I agree on the general sentiment...silly students misbehaving.

I didnt know the race of the students until ekhaatwindowz posted, but to be blunt, if they were white I would give them a p0esklap. And if they were black I would give them a p0esklap. The only problem is I would be called a racist then...tis a shame when people got virtual parachutes and ace cards up their sleeves acting as get-out-of-jail-free cards

OMG tibby said something I actualy agree with. :)

I don't understand why we need political parties to represent STUDENTS on campus!? I also don't understand why an educated student would think that burning anything would prove a point/argument. It would be easier for the UP to shut down the Mamelodi campus if everything was destroyed anyway...and the students in question were protesting against the Mamelodi campus shutdown...
