Thanks for tunexp dobbez ;) I really like it, it's short, sweet and simple. Applied all the tweaks, now I gotta reboot :D
 
Jv16 Powertools (macecraft.com) is my choice because it does exactly what it says it will do. I bought it because my computer was really slow and was freezing up on me. I didn't want software that was too complicated, just something to get it running like it should. And I got it!
 
System mechanic (iolo technologies, I think) is also a good utility, but I bought myself TuneUp Utilities 2008....keeps my Vista Business laptop is top condition. :)

3rd part utilities do more harm than good IMO, windows comes with decent utilities and the only free utility I'll recommend is CCleaner for the odds and bobs.

How would he use tuneup or something similar on linux? I'm pretty sure this was a topic for windows and not a topic about linux.

Hmmm you linux okes must really be struggling for users to go on about it so much, if anything i think the fact you guys do this all the time makes people not want to even touch linux.

You guys are like desperate salesman who are struggling to sell anything, its very off putting if you ask me.

1) Keeping your system clean and well organised!
2) Doing a fresh install every six months
3) Adding more RAM
4) Adding a faster processor
5) Adding a better graphics card
6) Adding a faster hard drive
7) de-fragging
8) Optimising your page file
9) keeping your registry clean
10) unloading stupid utilities that load at start-up

Do that... and you won't need "system tune-up utilities" ;)

I don't really like those tune-up things....most of there tricks have zilch effect on Vista/XP and are remenants from 98/2k/Me.

As far as tuning goes, I pretty much just switch off services and OS features.
