Which Mobile phone to get best data downloads.

Hi All,

Which phone will be the best to get top data downloads.
I'm currently on Samasung D600 which swings a lot, from 0 to 4500bps.
At times it sits on 0 for a long time. I't logs on at 460800bps.

I tested this on two diffrent Operating systems.
Linux and WinXP.

I'm current staying in Dersley Springs area.
Vodacom map shows only standard GPRS and MTN say EDGE.
Who do you belief. Rep from cell C say's also Edge.

i'm not to sure about what coverage you have, that phone supports Edge but i think it will depend more on the time of day and which network, voda, mtn, cellc, you use as well as "how the wind is blowing". i dont think changing the phone will really have a dramatic effect on the speed or consistency, however i must say i've never had a problem with that on my nok 6680 3g phone.. just my opinion on your problem, cant really say what the main r3eason for the up and down speeds is

I won't say its the phone itself... But i have seen certian phones do keep their signal much better than others... Wich intern will keep your internet connection more stable.. and also keep your speed level.

i agree, one way to test this is to take your phone somewhere else far from your house and see how it works there. if it does the same its propably your phone, if it work fine then its your house. :)

Hi Howto, welcome to the forum.
For data, I'd recommend the 6680. When you are in an EDGE coverage area often not all towers are EDGE enabled. Usually you can't control which tower your phone selects. With the 6680 you can use netmonitor (an app you have to load yourself) to lock the phone to a tower of your choice.

Also, you can lock the phone to 3G only if you are in a 3G coverage area to prevent the phone from switching to GPRS whenever it feels like it.

Netmonitor is currently not available for any N series phones.
Forgot to mention, the 6680 does GPRS, EDGE and 3G.

When I do the speed test with the Samsung I dont even get a reply.
If I use my daughters motorola phone with speed test I get results.

The N70 has GPRS, EDGE and 3G, not sure about the N71. My friend is happy with his N70. To keep his phone on 3G, he keeps it vertically placed on his desk. If your 3G signal is strong where you live, the phone should stay on 3G.
I must add the netmonitor is a bit of a geeky menu to operate on the 6680, so maybe you'd rather not go that route.

Phone is a Samsung D600, it only has GPRS.
I used it under Linux or XP. Same issues.
