Cape Town - South African financial institutions should learn from their UK counterparts, by not replicating the expensive lessons that UK firms have learnt, says Anton de Souza, lead Financial Services partner for Ernst and Young.

"The South African market is trailing the United Kingdom when it comes to the issue of treating customers fairly," says de Souza. .......

In my experience it's almost as if South African companies look at the UK and see the tricks companies get up to and then do exactly the same here because they can.

Vodacom is a good example - with their huge expensive misleading ads and complex expensive pricing structure. They must know from their 'parent' company Vodafone how to behave in the cellphone market, because they have had their own fair share of knuckle-wrapping in the UK. [Assuming information ripples down this far South.] Yet they continue with their anti-competitive behaviour like locking data cards in to the network, cutting off users who don't fit their profit model and their shoddy service standards which show no signs of improvement.
