Smokers need not apply

That means that smokers have the right to boycott company's that dont employ smokers. /me goes for a smoke.

Lol, ridiculous. Most smokers (the ones I know anyhow) purposefully don't take a 1 hour lunch break or their two 15 minutes breaks (as guarenteed in the basic conditions of employment act) BECAUSE they know that they are spending this time outside smoking throughout the day.

You don't see people who make a lot of coffee cutting down their lunchtime in lieu of time spent making coffee.

Or people who go to the toilet 95 times day cutting down their lunchtime in lieu of time spent in the toilet.

Or people who talk talk talk skinner skinner skinner all day at the office cutting down their lunchtime in lieu of time spent gossiping.

As for 'polluting the air' - this argument is flat. A non-smoker who drives 30 km to work and back probably puts more toxins into the air in one return trip on one day than a smoker does in 10 years. Likewise, those who eat constantly at McDonalds easily cause more harm to other people's health and the environment in terms of waste generated, old-growth forest destroyed for their hamburgers, factory effluence dumped into rivers, pesticides leaked into topsoil, wastes seeped into the water table, etc etc.

As much as I despise inconsiderate smokers, tobacco companies and the whole "smoking mentality", I do not think that discrimination of that form is acceptable (unless there are very clear reasons - such as the position is for the head of public health etc).

personally, I do all the "good deals" in the smoking room at work.
The other party cant go anywhere, and you have their undivided attention for 10 minutes. That is more than can be said for most meeting rooms or chance encounters in the hallway with a director. Plus the semi-casual atmosphere makes it easier for folks to say what they want.

but aren't all passive smokers also - well - smokers?

Well, you certainly know some enlightened smokers. That said, I neither work in an office environment, nor have ever been a smoker, so I don't know from the rhythms of the lifestyle.

So do the smokers who are doing exactly the same trips driving back and forth. Only, not only are they polluting the air with their cars too, they're also puffing their own toxins, care of smoking, into the air ..not so much "flat". And if that isn't enough, NO small amount of the time this is followed up by tossing the stompie out onto the road and polluting the environment. And with enough (too damn many! ) smokers doing this, you still want to defend that this is a null argument? How about that one smoker (they mostly REALLY don't watch or care where they toss their stompies) who tosses it into dry, highly combustible winter veld - how much pollution, damage and expense does that warrant?

So now it's only non-smokers eating at McD? ... or, as above, maybe there are as many, if not more, smokers contributing in exactly the same way to global waste and pollution, making this the "flat argument"

Agree totally. Well said.

I'll just stop smoking, get the job, and then accidently happen to start smoking a week after they hired me. What they gonna do, fire me because I smoke?? I'd like to see them try! This is fscked up

Why stop? Just tell them you're a non smoker, then a week later "start" smoking because of the stress of the job :D
