Telkom says SNO may pose threat to earnings

yes, well, I have no doubt that there are many many people who will go out of their way to ensure that Telkom loses as many customers as possible and deservedly so.
 
Santa Claus or the Easter bunny are a more credible threat at this time.

Let us examine this some more. If Telkom loses R1 as a result of the SNO, it has affected earnings - the extent of the "effect" is besides my point :D

Now, I have an ADSL 384 line - and am not going to upgrade to a 1024line at this time, because I am waiting for BPL / SNO / GOAL.co.za or whoever to make an offer. Therefore, Telkom are losing R200-R300 a month from me, as a result of competition.

This, I assume, can be carried through to the decisions being made by many companies and other individuals as well.

So, the SNO does not even have to be in business yet to affect Telkom's bottom line.

And by the logic of the copyright lobby you are stealing from Telkom by not buying their services.

But don't you want the services you are not currently using at the same or a lower price than the service you are using? In that case Telkom wouldn't make any more money.

What Telkom is doing is everything possible to drive away current customers.
 
how much profit they make comes from sat-3, coporate and home users resp. ?

But that's like bludgeoning your nose with an 800 pound crowbar to spite your face... You're disadvantaging yourself to get back at a company who doesn't give a swimming carp whether you are using them or not.

I hear what you say though, but this only works when everybody employs this tactic, not just a few...
 
Also, it is my understanding that he who controls the milk supply determines the quality of the cheddar, and in this case (till at least January next year) Telscum is very much in control.

Not really, its a matter of personal choice really. Something which the consumer has never had.

Same as I have a good mind to erase any family members names or beneficiaries from my last will and testament that use Telkoms services in the future out of mere principle. Telkom couldnt care a toss that I do that, but the fact of the matter is that I care and it makes a difference to me and the potential beneficiaries still have a choice ;)

Seriousely though, I personally will not upgrade my own ADSL 512 connection with Telkom, ever, if it is going to cost me 1 penny more than it costs me now, just not economically viable on my current income.

I am even thinking of downgrading my connection as my need for bandwidth outweighs my need for speed, personal usage pattern only and this will no doubt differ from user to user.
I'm not spiting myself at all, its just the economics of it all.

Just to damn expensive.
 
sneeky: my point is not whether you care, but whether telscum cares. if everyone takes action (by dropping to the lowest connection like 384 for example, then telkom would do one of two things: drop prices OR use this as "proof" that everyone is happy with lower speed internet access and that they needn't up their speeds again. We hope for the first, but Telkom would likely opt for the latter
 
If any Telkom peeps are reading, we can only afford your cheapest solution, that way we use it, make it cheaper still and I'll consider upgrading to a 1 meg line with 30 GB allocation for the month, I'll pay you 350 bucks for this service (including ISP costs/Line).
 
jontyB, my point is not about whether Telkom cares or not, f@ck Telkom, its simple economics.
I am continuously topping up my bandwidth, need to finance that somehow and one way of subsidising that is by reducing my connection speed.
